Check for spark. Start at the coil, spark at the plug, Could be the coil or crank position sensor. Check codes.

I have a 96 camry. It blew a timing belt. In the result of that. It bent valves. So i had engine rebuilt. Now it wont start. It back fires. So i thought the timing was wrong. Pulled distributor and rotated...

I am puzzled over how this bent your engine valves, as these engines are "non-interference", that is, the pistons should not contact the valve heads in the event of a snapped timing belt.

Well, you have a rebuilt engine, so..... an engine which backfires and will not start is almost certain to be mistimed, that is, the crankshaft, camshafts, and distributor are not in the right relationship.

You will need to check the crank sprocket and camshaft sprockets, in relation to the marks on them, as here, p 26

and then make sure to install the distributor properly, p 17

Wont start

Have you checked the fusebox in the engine compartment? If you have any shorts in the ignition circuits that can point toward a failed component.

Toyota camry 2002 timing

Ignition timing?
On that engine the ecu reads the crank and cam sensor on startup to determine top dead center and controls the ignition timing and advance from there.. There is no distributor and no timing adjustment.

Camry SEI MODEL 1993

The first thing that I would do would be to have the throttle body/throttle valve cleaned, it's probably dirty. The second thing that I would do would be have an induction cleaning done. Third, I would replace the ignition wires (if they are over 3 years old) distributor cap, rotor & coil, and finally, have the auto trans power flushed. These are maintenance items that many people overlook. At the very least, change the ignition wires, cap & rotor, and make SURE that you have genuine Toyota plugs in your engine. Non-Toyota plugs cause issues at times. I'm pretty sure that this will fix you up.
