Taking a while to go into gear

I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. it has a 4.0 straight 6 with 175,000 miles. full time 4wd and an automatic transmission. my question is sometimes after starting it, it dosent feel like its in gear. it goes but very slow then it kicks in, it also does that when leaving a stop sign and the engine dosent feel very powerful. i know its a 6cyl but even when i stomp on it it just feels very underpowered for being rated at 190hp

I have the same issue. Once I check the fluid level, if it is full, what else can I do just shy of replacing the whole thing or having it rebuilt? Someone mentioned some sort of sensor or something that could also cause this.

This was not really what I was looking for. I was wondering what sensor, if any, could be causing this in a transmission. However, it looks like I'm going to have to shell out the $1000.00 to get it done anyway.

Check the fluid level of the transmission. The model number in your vehicle is the A500,also designated the 42RE.With this trans, the fluid level is checked with the trans in Neutral, and the parking brake set, with the vehicle on level ground. If it is low on fluid, then there is a leak that must be located, and repaired.

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4WD automatic 4.0. I have been having issues with the transmission. It seems the gears are slipping at times. Last week after about 200 miles on a trip, I was...

no.
but slips , is big deal.
check fuses
check levels
full flush it.
scan it yet, no, but if the TCM is in limphome mode
it will not shift right, so why do you skip scanning it.
what it the TCM tells you a speed sensors is borked.
why work blind.?scan it.first.
does it slip in 1st gear?

at 70mph that is called transmission flare, never a good sign that.

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo it has 4all time neutral and 4lo should i keep it in 4all time all the time or does that ruin it

Yes, Your Jeep is what is known as a Quadra-Trac. This type of cherokee is an all wheel drive model. 4 wheel all time is for everyday driving, Neutral completely dissconects the drive train from the transmission and will not move at all. 4 wheel low is more for off road conditions where traction is compromised. 4 wheel low should NEVER be used at speed above 15 miles an hour.

To the guy above: 4 wheel drive is designed for low end pulling power and safer handling on slippery road conditions. 4 wheel drive has NOTHING to do with how fast you go or how fast you stop. Don't post a comment if you clearly don't know the correct information.

MY 2005 JEEP CHEROKEE LAREDO JUST STOPED DRIVING

If engine sounds okay, (when you accelerate, it revs up, etc.) then could be a transmission problem. (assume this is an automatic?)

Check fluid level first, if okay, next suggestion would be to change fluid & filter.

When you select a gear, do you get anything, any slight jolt to the vehicle?

If nothing at all, also might check the transmission lever linkage.

Is this 4WD or 2WD? If 4WD, also need to check transfer case setting, make sure it is properly set.
