There are two possibilities here. One the battery could have a short inside, and the other is you have something on the car draining the battery. To learn which it is you unhook the postive battery cable from the battery and leave over night, if the battery is still charged the next morning you have a problem with the car, if the battery is discharged then the battery has a short inside and must be replaced.

SOURCE: battery not holding a charge

Hi

Normally all circuits should be dead when you switch off the ignition.

Only usual live one, is the radiator electric fan.

You should hear this running after you switch off, for only a short while, if you listen you can eliminate this.

Perhaps glove box, or trunk lights are sticking on ? but normally you only get them if side lamps are on, but still worth checking !

You will have to try disconnecting the battery over a weekend, if it is flat on Monday, it must be the battery.

Good Luck

P.S. Don´t forget to give me a rating please !

John.

SOURCE: i installaed new alternater, and battery in 1987

Look at the connecting block and wires.
Not sure about this but it sounds as if a wire is not connected properly. Some have a single wire not with the block. It may even be a separate earth wire

SOURCE: charge battery car runs fine then stalls and wont

Runs fine for how long? Is battery dead when car quits? If you jump it, will it immediately restart? Inspect fusible links on top of battery housing. You will probably find some burning/overheating there.

Wont hold a charge.new starter, new battery, alternater is good

go to an auto parts store that will give FREE battery & alternator tests. if both are confirmed good. suspect a parasitic or phantom drain. meaning, even if the the car was turned off (no key in ignition), there's a load (in addition to computer, radio, security system memories= these have neglible draw) which is still drawing current from the battery.

The car is having power drained somewhere. Check for an electrical short or some kind of "on" power source. Good Luck!!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vehicle wont hold charge after one day or so of non use

Sounds like you have a drain. Take off the positive battery post, and hook a test light to the unhooked positive battery cable. Then touch the end of the test light to the battery positive post on the battery,...if it lights up,with the key off,and all doors closed, then you have a system draw. Start pulling fuses untill the test light bulb goes out. When it goes out,use your manual to see what that fuse operates, and that will narrow it down for you. Good Luck!

wow if your battery is that old i would get a different one but you can have the battery and alternator tested for free at a auto parts store they can tell you if its junk or not but thats why your having them problems when your alternater spins it charges the battery if the battery is no good it wont hold a charge and you car will die now it the alternater is bad it will not keep the battery charged and your car will die.

Not charging

First tell me why you don't think it's charging.
Because of the voltage reading you are getting at the battery terminals? The range you want is between 13.6v to 14.2v. The higher the voltage the lower the amps. and true the other way, the lower the voltage the higher the amps. If you get a reading of 13.6v or lower, the alt is nearing or at max output. An alt can only run at maximum for around fifteen minutes and it will start slinging solder from overheating. It's a good indication the battery is either totally dead or junk. Charging above 14.2 the alternater is running wide open and is only putting out high volts which will cause the battery to boil , in turn destroying it. This is a bad alternater. All alternaters have integrated voltage regulater with the exception of ver few of the earlier ones. You cannot test an alternater by removing a battery cable to see if the engine keeps running without taking great risk of damaging the alt, regulator. So tell me why you feel it isn't charging. Remember an alt is not made to charge dead batteries. Their sole function is to maintain the battery charge. Without a battery, the alt won't last 10 seconds.
Hope to hear from you and good luck.
