Question about 1995 Chevrolet S-10 CA Edition

Igniton timing I have a 5.7 engine with a delco est distributor, I replace the cap rotor wire and plugs. when I set the timing I saw my timing light change a little, like 2 or may 3 deg advanced. And it will back fire out the carb under way a about 3400 rpm.

Hmmm, sounds like the problem I just went through. Took me a while to figure it out. If your distributor cap isn't AC Delco OEM, this will happen sooner than later. Autozone caps are the WORST, won't last very long until you have internal arcing. By the way, other brands including Autozone seem to work fine, in OTHER vehicles for me. This engine needs to have AC Delco Plugs, Cap, and Rotor. After replacing with a new cap, does this problem disappear for a while, then come back? Also, make sure the cap is screwed down correctly, use a mirror for the back screw. And finally, double check that the PLASTIC screw tabs on the distributor are not broke off, causing your problem of not seating well or tight. If your are broken (VERY COMMON), only Napa makes a distributor repair kit. It's a metal arch, that attaches from the bottom of the distributor, then the screws in the cap thread into this. Hope this helps, it eluded me for months.

Its a plastic cap and and on its top the sparks wires get connected.A small plastic rotor spins inside the distributor cap, firing each spark plug as it rotates. If the distributor gets faulty there the engine may not perform well. in most cases it has been noticed that only replacing the cap does not helps but with cap the rotors also need to be replaced. The procedure is as follows:--- 1) First of all disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2) Then remove the spark-plug wires . Note:-- Before removing the spark plug wires please note down how and where the wires are connected,then only remove the connections. 3) Then on the distributor there will be a cap.remove that cap.the cap is connected by two pins.you will have to press the pins from each side to loosen the distributor cap.Then lift the distributor cap from the top. 4)Then remove the rotor From distributor The rotor is fitted with two screws.Remove the screws and loosen the rotor. 5) Then lift the rotor out from its shaft. 6) To install new rotor and cap.reverse the procedure. Set the engine to the number one compression,and bring the timing mark to zero on the harmonic balancer.(or just bring the timing on the harmonic to zero). mark to match the plug wires to cap,remove the cap.(if you can remove the cap without removing plug wire) mark the rotor position to the engine using a scribe, mark the rotor to the distributor, mark the distributor to the engine using a scribe,Take the lock down bolt out and pull out distributor. when you reinstall line up all your marking and check timing.

I have a 1988 ford F150 4.9L VIN code (Y) .I had a bad head gasket and a bad head so i replaced both of them. Now that everything is back together i can get the engine to crank but not fire over.


I would suggest that you have incorrectly timed the engine.The proper way is to set number one cylinder to top dead centre on the compression stroke, if you look at the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine you should see a groove that marked top dead centre.With the engine at set at top dead centre take the distributed out of its mounting.
with the cap removed, you should find a small market on the top face of the distributor body.
This might only be a small mark but it is on the flange where the cap normally sits.
When you insert the distributor the mark on that distributor casing should line up with the distributor rotor button. You may have to remove the distributor slightly so that you can line up the rotor a button.
You may in fact have to do this two or three times until you get the marks lined up.
Then check the firing order of your engine, this is normally marked somewhere on the engine.
Once you have done this you should find the engine will start, you may have to adjust the advance on the distrubor to 4 to 12 degrees before TDC with a timing light.

Chev 396 backfires through carburator while starting then stalls. Is the timing Advanced and if so how do I change it enough to get the car running?


Hi wyocwboy here, Have you changed Spark Plug Wires ,or distributor Cap & Rotor? If you have this really sounds more like a Few spark Plug Wires have Been put on wrong. If you have'nt changed opr moved any of the wires or changed cap & rotor,Its Possible that your Timing Chain has jumped a Notch.Clean off your Damper -Which is the Bottom Pully your Hamonic Balacer, then rotate your enging until you Find your Timing Marks, Clean good and take a Marker or best a Chalk or Soap stick and mark it a 8 Degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center) Hook up a Timimg like Assuming it does run.And see if your able to see the Timing light Flashing on the mark if not Rote your Distributor either way Slowly and See if you can get the Light on the MARK you Made on The Harmonic Balancer. If Not Either Your Timing Chain Jumped a Notch or your Distributor may be off a nocth. To Check to see if your Timing Chain Jumped a Notch =Remove the COIL WIRE from Distributor Cap So it Won't Start then Remove #-1 Spark Plug Have a Friend Turn the Key off and On just Bumping the Engine a Little at a Time,Keeping a Compression Gauge in the #-1 Plug Hole When the Gauge Needle goes up you are close to TDC (TOP DEAD CENTER) STOP THERE .Check to see if the Mark on your Bottom Pully you made is at or Close to Ling up on top dead center. Trace #-1 Spark Plug Wire up to the Distributor Cap Remember the wires In the Dist. Caps Position or mark it to. Pull the Cap off The Distributor Rotor Should Be Pointing to Close to Where Your Number 1-Spark Plug Wire was Located.

Check your knock sensor, and timing.

The distributor is controlled by the computer and springs, I can't recall but I don't remember seeing springs in there. Regardless, check anyways to see if there is any binding to your counter weights in the distributor.

Start with finding out why your check engine light is coming on, this way there is no expensive guessing work. Here is a link for you to retrieve the DTC codes and post me back. Be glad to help you get your S-10 running 100% again soon. eek.gif

Recheck your timing and you'd notice more difference if you increased your static timing advance from the stock setting of 10 Deg BTDC to 15 deg BTDC or so. Be sure when you adjust timing to disable the ESC circuit according to the manual. Otherwise the timing will be off scale and you won't even be able to see where it is with a timing lite.

The connector you're looking for is located in the passenger footwell, sometimes covered by the carpet/floor mat. It is a black connector, that has a tan/black wire in each side. Disconnect this wire and you will be able to see the base timing.

The ECM will control the timing with that wire connected. When it is disconnected the timing advance is controled strictly by the ICM (Ignition Control Module) located on the base of the dizzy.

How to set:
The vehicle emission control information label, which is found underhood, will often contain specifications or procedures for checking and adjusting timing that have been updated during production.

Set the parking brake and block the drive wheels, then warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Shut the engine OFF and connect the a timing light to the No. 1 spark plug (right front 2.8L engine, left front 4.3L engine or front plug on in-line engines):

If using a non-inductive type, connect an adapter between the No. 1 spark plug and the spark plug wire; DO NOT puncture the spark plug wire, for this will allow a voltage arc.

If using an inductive type, clamp it around the No. 1 spark plug wire.
If using a magnetic type, place the probe in the connector located near the damper pulley; this type must be used with special electronic timing equipment. Do not under any circumstances pierce the insulation of a spark plug wire in order to connect the timing light.

Clean off the timing marks, then label the pulley or damper notch and the timing scale with white chalk or paint for better visibility. If the timing notch on the damper or pulley is not visible from the top, the crankshaft should be bumped around using the starter or turned using a wrench on the front pulley bolt, in order to bring the mark to an accessible position.


Model vehicles equipped with EST, the electronic spark timing must be disabled or bypassed to prevent the control module from advancing timing while you are attempting to set it. This would obviously lead to an incorrect base timing setting.

There are 2 possible methods of disabling the EST system, depending on the type of engine:

On 2.5L engines, ground the "A" and "B" terminals on the ALDL connector under the dash before adjusting the timing.

On all other engines using the EST distributor, disengage the timing connector wire. On a few of the earlier model vehicles, the 4-terminal EST connector must be disengaged from the distributor, but most later model vehicles are equipped with a single wire timing bypass connector.

On these later model vehicles the bypass wire is usually a tan wire with a black stripe. This wire usually breaks out of the wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributor, but on some vehicles it may break out of a taped section just below the heater case in the passenger compartment.

Start the engine, then check and adjust the idle speed, as necessary. The idle speed must be properly set to prevent any centrifugal advance of timing in the distributor.

Aim the timing light at the timing marks. Be careful not to touch the fan, which may appear to be standing still. Keep your clothes and hair along with the timing light's wires clear of the fan, belts and pulleys. If the pulley or damper notch isn't aligned with the proper timing mark, the timing will have to be adjusted.

TDC or Top Dead Center corresponds to 0° mark on the scale. Either B, BTDC, or Before Top Dead Center, may be shown as BEFORE on the scale, while A, ATDC or After Top Dead Center, may be shown as AFTER.

Loosen the distributor base clamp locknut. You can buy special wrenches which make this task a lot easier on certain models. Turn the distributor slowly to adjust the timing, holding it by the body and not the cap. Turn the distributor in the direction of rotor rotation to ******, and against the direction to advance.

Once the timing is properly set, hold the distributor to keep it from the turning and tighten the locknut. Check the timing again after finishing with the nut in case the distributor moved as you tightened it.
If applicable, remove the plug and connect the distributor vacuum hose.
Shut off the engine and reconnect the EST wire (if equipped), then disconnect the timing light and tachometer. biggrin.gif

Also you may want to inspect the EGR to see if it's stuck, which may be causing our issue when the engine is under load.

Connect a timing light to the number one plug wire and crank the engine. Does the light flash indicating that the Number one is firing? Look at the distributor. If you have a distributor cap and rotor assembly remove the distributor cap and crank the engine. If the rotor turns check the rotor to make sure there is a good contact point and check the distributor cap to ensure there are good contacts. If either is damaged or worn replace them both. If the rotor does not turn you have a broken timing belt or one of the timing belt/chain guides has jammed and the engine needs to be rebuilt.

I just changed all spark plugs and wires with boash platium +4 spark plugs and boash wires. the problem i'm having it's only firing on 5 not 6, i checked all wires and there in the right places. I have...


1. Double check the connections at BOTH ends of the wires- at the distributor and at the plug. 2. Make sure each spark plug boot has proper connection. 3. Double check the plugs to make sure that they are all gapped correctly and no contamination. 4. Hold each spark plug upright and make sure that the ceramic insulator near the tip isn't loose and sliding down and possibly covering the metal tip..(had this happen more than once) 5. Check for spark at each plug (be careful) 6. Open the distributor cap and double check all the exposed metal connectors are clean. 7. buy one extra plug and change out the suspect plug.

  1. Insert each ignition wire on proper terminal of distributor cap . Ensure ignition wires are properly seated on the terminals. The No. 1 terminal is identified on distributor cap .
not sure if #1 cylinder is on the front right or front left. Call a dealer.

Installation
Before installing distributor , visually inspect distributor . Inspect the O-ring. It should fit tightly and be free of cuts. The drive gear should be free of nicks, cracks and excessive wear. Rotate distributor drive shaft. It should move freely, without binding.
  1. To install distributor correctly, No. 1 piston (6108) must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove No. 1 cylinder spark plug (12405) and rotate crankshaft (6303) clockwise until No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke.
  1. With No. 1 piston on compression stroke, align timing pointer with TDC on the crankshaft damper.
  1. Align locating boss on distributor rotor with hole on armature. Fully seat distributor rotor on distributor shaft.
  1. Rotate distributor shaft so blade on distributor rotor is pointing toward mark on distributor base that was previously made in Step 2 of the Removal procedure.
  1. While installing, continue rotating distributor rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly.
  1. Rotate distributor in engine front cover to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify distributor rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base. If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in engine front cover , remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate distributor rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of camshaft gear. Repeat Step 1 if necessary.
  1. Install distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Tighten bolt, but leave it loose enough to rotate distributor .
  1. Install distributor cap , No. 1 spark plug and ignition wires. Check that ignition wires are securely connected to the distributor cap and spark plugs . Tighten distributor cap hold-down screws to 2.0-2.6 Nm (18-23 lb-in).
  1. Reconnect distributor to engine control sensor wiring .
  1. Set initial engine ignition timing according to procedures found in Section 8A of the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual.
  1. After engine ignition timing is set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt on to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft).
  1. Recheck initial engine ignition timing. Adjust if necessary.
