Changing Oil Pan

Need to lift the engine slightly to remove leaking oil pan. What is the best way to do this and support it and how high does it need to be lifted.

I do not have a proper motor lifting device.

Oil pan leaking.

not the easiest job at home but if you have way to lift the car securely and tools not a problem.
first lift the car and secure.drain the oil.remove the exhaust pipe to clear the oil pan, remove the bolts from oil pan. between the motor and transmission is a small plate.remove the plate to access two more bolt from the oil pan. with big flat screwdriver pray the pan on the back side.you will find lip on block and the pan to insert the pray bar or screwdriver.clean the pan from old gasket.clean the block from old gasket. install new gasket on the pan and insert 4 screw to hold in place.on front of the engine is the timing cover connection.one drop of silicon will seal the gap.place the pan and drive the 4 screw 3-4 turns.install the rest ant slightly tight all across. (ask you auto store for silicone gasket. the old cork is not so good) .tight all screw again.don't over tight.stop if the gasket start to deform out of the pan.replace the oil filter. refill oil and start the car.check for leaks.
good luck.

Change oil pan on a 2001 sonoma

the 2.2 engine and the 4.3 engine with 2WD MODEL you have to remove engine.the 4WD MODELS, you have to remove all these parts first remove dip stick, drive belt, splash shield, remove front axle shield and the transfer case shield, front skid plate and the flywheel cover, remove left and right engine mount through bolts.then raise the engine using a lifting device, and block in position, using large wooden blocks between the motor mounts and brackets.you will also need to remove these parts, remove disconnect oil cooler line, remove pitman aem bolt and pitman arm, remove idler arm bolts and idler arm, remove front differential through bolts, remove front driveshaft if necessary, remove differential assembly by rolling it forward for clearance, remove starter motor, then remove oil pan bolts then remove oil pan, your oil pan need to be flushed slightly forward of rear of the block to allow proper alignment with the transmission housing.using feeler gauge measure the 3 oil pan to transmission contact points.clearance should not exceed 0.011 in. 0.3mm if so realign the oil pan.oil pan bolts torque is 18 ft lbs tighten oil pan bolts in sequence.

It appears that i have oil dripping from my oil pan area. is there a gasket on the oil pan i need to replace?

oil leaking anywhere on the engine runs down and gets caught on the oil pan lip, builds up runs over and then looks to be an oil pan leak. so what you do is take the thing to a shop with a lift, like an oil change or muffler shop, and ask them to put it up on the lift so the rest of the engine can be easily examined for leaks. if there is no other place above the oil pan with a thin layer of oil on it, then most likely the pan gasket is leaking. before you buy the gasket take a good look at any suspension hardware which could obstruct easy removal of the oil pan. it may require lifting the engine up out of its mounts to get the gasket replaced, so simply snugging up the bolts holding the pan on and living with a small leak may be the way to go.

1992 Ford Crown Victoria Oil Pan is leaking. Is this a major problem to replace? Fred

It is recommended that you lift out the engine before attempting to replace the oil pan. Once the engine is lifted you can remove the bolts, remove the pan, clean all the old gasket material.
Installation: Remove the rear main bearing cap oil seal Remove the timing cover oil seal Clean all the mating surfaces and seal grooves Install new oil pan front cover seals Install a new rear main bearing cap oil seal Install new oil pan side gaskets on the block Make sure the tabs of the front and rear seal fit properly as these are critical spots Attach the oil pan to the engine block and install the retaining bolts
