What causes oil to get into air intake on 5L engine?

Odds are that it is coming in through the PCV tube. Make sure that the PCV valve is clean and functioning. There will be a rubber or plastic tube that connects the air filter shroud to the PVC valve which will probably be on the top of one of the rocker arm covers.

My corvair engine does not have a pcv system, can I tap a vacuum line off one of the valve covers and filter incoming air into the oil fill spout>

Generally speaking, yes.
You would also need to plug the road draft tube.
The system would need to pull vac on the pcv valve from one side of the engine and allow air to enter the crankcase thru the air filter from another access point such as the oil filler pipe.

1998 Chevy Malibu is using excessive oil. Had an oil change done back in October 2012 . Then checked Oil level in December of 2012 and was about 3/4 low in oil! why ?

first thing check make sure oil pan drain plug tight. check make sure oil filter tight. try tighten oil filter by hand see if turn tighten oil filter clockwise direcction if all is good. how many miles on vechicle.could have oil leaks park vechicle in spot that clean.move vechicle see if you see oil spots on ground if yes.your front timing cover seal leaking oil or rear main oil seal ;eaking.or valve cover gaskets leaking.if find no oil leaks more likely engine burning oil.replace pcv valve.check air filter if you see oil in air filter housing either have bad pcv valve or pcv not getting vacuum make sure pcv valve getting vacuum when engine running vacuum should be felt at pcv if not pcv valve bad or pcv hose disconnected broken or plugged.if pcv valve okay engine has worn piston rings.worn valve seals or guides or oil return holes stopped up thats all possible reasons for engine burning oil.if spark plugs oil fouled engine burning oil.

1992 ford f150 302 engine. Oil is leaking in to air filter which means it is coming from the air intake from the engine. Air filter is soaked and dripping to the ground. Any ideas on what is might be??

It is more likely that the oil is coming into the air cleaner by way of the CrankCase Vent.
There should be a tube that goes from one of the Valve Covers directly to the Air Cleaner.

Inside the AirCleaner Housing, there is the Air Filter, but there should also be a much smaller filter, sort of held in a little box, where the tube from the valve cover comes in.

This condition usually manifests when the vehicle has very high miles. It is caused by excessive BlowBy in the cylinders to the CrankCase. It will help to Change the Positive CrankCase Ventilation Valve. If it is plugged, it will make the situation worse. So, get a new PVC valve, and that is about all you can do, except to keep the air cleaner new, and the oil topped off.

Where do i find the pcv valve on a 97 sunfire

The PCV (Positive Cranckase Ventilation valve) is going to be on the valve cover. Usually has a rubber hose about 5/8 coning off it and running to the intake.

This is for the 2.2L OHV engine 1997 and earlier... according to Haynes, the 1998 & later 2.2L OHV engines "have an oil/air seperator inside the valve rocker arm cover that requires no maintenance. 2.3L and 2.4L OHC engines are equipped with an oil/air seperator that is attached to the side of the block above the oil filter."

As you are standing in front of the car facing the engine, if you look down at the top of the engine it is in the back lefthand corner of the valve cover. You will see a weird looking 1-1 1/4 inch star shaped nut on a round thing that sort of slopes up out of and toward the back of the engine & has about a 4" tube sticking out of it connecting to the fuel injector? assembly. If it is on too tight to loosen with by hand use a channel locks pliers to loosen it. Then pull the tube out & the pcv valve will be inserted into the end of the tube. Simply replace & hand tighten the nut.

Hope helped (remember comment and rated this).

Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???

most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

if you have more question please ask.

Oil in the air filter and housing

Normally due to a worn out engine, called "blow by."
But, see if you have an air tube coming from the valve cover that may have a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. This valve can plug up and cause a little bit of oil issue.
You can get a compression test done to see what condition the engine is in.

PCV valve location

if i know what you are asking, look at where you put your oil in. on the valve cover to the top right should be a plug with a tubeing runs to your air clear tube where the air mass sensor and carb is located. i think that is what you are looking for.
