Front Rotor Removal

I have the nut off the front axel. How do I get the Rotor to come off? I don't want to break anything.

Getting the top lock nut off


These nuts are drift nuts, meaning you have to unbend them from being held into place. Use a hammer and old screwdriver to straighten out the flanges. Once there, use a socket wrench with a cheater bar to break the nut loose, I use a piece of pipe for about a 6 foot cheater. Leftt loosey on both front wheels. If you still can't loosen it, go by a mechanic somewhere and give him $5 to break the nut loose with an air wrnech, then tighten it up not as tight, then drive home and continue your task. If your task is to replace the rotor, the job is not simple, as the rotor and bearings and steering knuckle are pressed together, and kind-of needs a mechanic to pry them apart and re-install them...good luck...Chris

What do i need to take apart to remove the drivers side front drive axel to replace the universal joint at the hub? could the axel slide threw the hole for the axel berring assembly or do you need to take...


Have not done this on your truck but book says just the upper ball joint needs separated. See procedure below from autozone.com. Please let me know if you have questions.
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels (left side should be sufficient in your case) Front hub cotter pin, retainer and nut (axle nut)
  2. Using a floor hydraulic jack, support the lower suspension arm.

    Upper ball joint cotter pin and castle nut Knuckle from the front suspension upper arm
  3. Lower the lower suspension arm and steering knuckle slightly to facilitate easier halfshaft removal.
  4. Remove the 2 disc caliper mounting bolts, then lift the front disc caliper off of the front disc brake caliper anchor plate and position aside. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose; suspend it from the vehicle's frame with strong cord or wire.
  5. Remove the 6 front halfshaft-to-differential bolts.
    WARNING Use care to avoid damaging the hub seal when removing the front halfshaft.

7. Remove the inboard end of the halfshaft from the differential case or extension axle case. Separate the front halfshaft and joints from the hub, then remove the halfshaft and joints from the vehicle.



To install:

  1. Slide the halfshaft outboard end into the hub, making sure that the splines engage.
  2. Situate the inboard end of the halfshaft against the front differential flange and install the 6 halfshaft-to-differential bolts. Tighten the halfshaft bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm).
  3. Install the front disc brake caliper onto the rotor and anchor plate, then install and tighten the 2 caliper mounting bolts to 21-26 ft. lbs. (28-36 Nm).
  4. Lift the lower suspension arm and steering knuckle up until the upper ball joint stud is inserted into the steering knuckle. Install the upper ball joint castle nut and tighten to 57-76 ft. lbs. (77-104 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  5. Install the hub nut onto the halfshaft and tighten the hub nut to 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm).
  6. Install the hub nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  7. Install the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts in a star-shaped sequence to 83-112 ft. lbs. (113-153 Nm).
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

remove 3 bolts holding hub in
sometimes may need to hit hub with hammer after all bolts out to get it to release

How do you remove the Hub and Rotor on a 97' F250 with Auto 4 wheel drive? I can not get the rotor to come off. I know that the hub must come with it. However, I am not sure what I have not removed in...

  1. Remove the lock ring seated in the groove of the front disc brake hub and rotor (1102).

  1. Remove the hub body assembly from the front disc brake hub and rotor. If the body is difficult to remove, install two capscrews and pull the body assembly out of the front disc brake hub and rotor.

Installation
  1. NOTE: Do not pack the hublock body assembly or cap with grease. Excessive grease can cause excessive dialing effort and hub failure.

    Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
  1. Tighten three Torx® head capscrews to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lb-in).

if youve removed the cotter pin that holds it in place.then its just stuck use sum PBblaster.then get the biggest breaker bar u can an u should get it.(slide a metal pipe over the breaker bar for more muscle

How do you remove the front passenger hub on a 98 escort. I wrenched on the nut, but it won't loosen


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Front Brakes
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Unfasten the disc brake caliper retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the disc brake caliper and secure the caliper aside with mechanic's wire. Do not disconnect the brake hose.
  5. Pull the brake rotor from the hub.
  6. Inspect the rotor and refinish or replace, as necessary. If refinishing, the minimum thickness rotor thickness is stamped on the brake rotor.
  7. To install:
  8. Place the brake rotor to the hub. Make sure the mating surfaces are free of rust which may prevent the brake rotor from seating properly.
  9. Remove the mechanic's wire and position the brake caliper.
  10. Install the brake caliper retaining bolts to specification.
  11. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Pump the brake pedal several times to position the brake pads before moving the vehicle.
  14. Road test the vehicle and check the brake system for proper operation.

It sounds like your hub/rotor is froze on....you'll need to apply some penetrant in the lug stud areas as wells as the area where the rotor mates to the axle hub.

I need to know the procedure for r and r on a front rotor if this is something that can be done at home with limited tools?


1999 Taurus/Sable Section 06-03: Brakes, Front Disc 1999 Taurus/Sable Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 06/25/1998 Disc Removal
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  1. Remove wheel and tire assembly. Be careful to avoid damage or interference with caliper bleeder screw fitting and front disc brake rotor shield (2K004).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Handle front disc brake rotor (1125) and disc brake caliper (2B120) assembly in such a way as to prevent deformation of front disc brake rotor , and nicking, scratching or contamination of brake linings/rotor surfaces.
    NOTE: To prevent damage, do not allow disc brake caliper to hang by the front brake hose (2078) .


    Remove caliper anchor plate bolts and discard. Position disc brake caliper out of the way. Prevent separation of caliper housing from anchor bracket because contamination of guide pin journals can occur.
  1. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during front disc brake rotor removal, the front disc brake rotor should be checked for runout prior to installation.


    If additional force is required to remove front disc brake rotor , apply Rust Penetrant and Inhibitor F2AZ-19A501-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C56-A on front and rear rotor/hub mating surfaces. First, strike front disc brake rotor between lug bolts (1107) with a plastic hammer. If this does not work, attach 2-3 Jaw Puller 205-D027 (D80L-1013-A) or equivalent and remove front disc brake rotor . Remove front disc brake rotor from wheel hub (1104) assembly by pulling it off the lug bolts.
Installation
  1. If original front disc brake rotor is being installed, make sure rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean.
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Failure to clean rust and foreign material from rotor and hub mounting faces when installing new or old front disc brake rotors will result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness shudder vibration.
    Apply a small amount of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A to pilot diameter of front disc brake rotor.
  1. Install front disc brake rotor on wheel hub assembly.
  1. Install disc brake caliper and new caliper anchor bracket bolts on front disc brake rotor . Tighten caliper anchor bracket bolts to 88-118 Nm (65-87 lb-ft).
  1. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Failure to tighten lug nuts (1012) in a star pattern may result in high rotor runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.
    Install wheel and tire assembly on vehicle. Tighten lug nuts to 115-142 Nm (85-104 lb-ft) using Rotunda Accutorq® Lug Nut Socket 164-R0303 or equivalent on a 1/2 inch air impact wrench, or use a torque wrench.
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Pump brake pedal prior to moving vehicle to position brake linings.
  1. Road test vehicle.

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4. Remove the calipers, but don't disconnect the brake lines. Suspend the calipers out of the way.
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten wheel lug nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (101 Nm).

Right front wheel seems to stick when vehicle is in drive.


does it feel like its draging when you try to back up? and what do you mean by center bolt? do you mean the big nut on axel in center of wheel? i am going to take a guess here and say its the break caliber piston, where the break pads are, is not releasing from break rotor. witch means its like you got the breaks on. jack wheel off the ground and see if you can spin the wheel by hand. if you cannot spin it that might be it. you also said you tighten axel nut (at least i think thats what you ment)tells me maybe something else is going on here like axel bearing is tied up witch can happen too. when you get wheel off ground and it will not turn by hand pull wheel off and try to push caliber piston back in with a large screwdriver wedge it between the pad and rotor. sould go back fairly easy, you don't have to go back a whole lot just anought to get a gap between rotor and pad then see if you can turn it, if not then it must be wheelbearing. if wheel turns after you do this than caliber is bad and needs replaced. its not stuck in 4x4 even if it was it would not be doing what you discribed.hope this helps.
