no year car told, age matters on all machines. all.
all cars run about 15psi , pure physics of hot water expansion and cap pressure regulated.
my guess is you mean the overflow tank on side of RAD,that has exploding steam and water to this side tank? "violently" that be gross overheating
lots of causes and lots of tests. to find it.
bad thermostat ,10 years is like max. life.
dead water pump.
bad radiator
bad RAD fan. dead. or dual fan 2nd is dead.
low coolant, sure, after now but is no cure filled and tried. full up in rad dead cold 50%AF MIX.
FANS BELT MISSING OR LOOSE. (TO PUMP)
BLOWN HEAD GASKET OR WARPED HEAD(S) CAUSED.
SIDE TANK HOSES BAD MORE MISSING SUCH THE EVERY COOL DOWN AF DOES NOT GET SUCKED BACK INTO RAD. MAKING IT DROP LEVELS OVER TIME.
ALL WATER HOSES CAN LEAk or heater core. causing water loss and bingo overheats.
I'd start with replacing thermostat (that's the most common fault) Other possibilities; waterpump, leaky hose, radiator cap (not holding pressure), fan belt broken. I'd inspect for belt & leaks - if good replace thermostat.
sounds like a head gasket blown, when engine is cold, remove rad cap and make sure rad is full, start engine and see if bubbles are pushed out of the rad filler spout, a blown head gasket will pressure up your coolant system, was the rad changed because of overheating, do you have the thermostat installed wrong? the sensor side toward engine. if head gasket is ok, next you could check your rad cap, is the gasket ok? can you check if it holds the required pressure. might need replacing. also if you could pressure test the coolant system and see if it holds.
Might be blown head gasket. Is there oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil? Either of these would tell you that.
Also the exhust can get into the coolant and make the coolant low all the time.
I had two Chrysler products that the exhaust forced coolant out and had a bad head gasket.
could be waterpump?
i was going to say rad fan,but if so heater would be hot.
lack of coolant will make heater core to blow cold,if engine heats up with full coolant, usually means poor or no circulation.
water pump?
run engine with full coolant,at operating temp.with rad cap off and look in rad cap hole and see if there is movement of water inside rad.
[rad fan will not come on if water is not circulating through rad water pump?]
I would defiantly check the water pump, can you feel pressure in the rad lines? when you changed the rad and thermostat out, did you run your vehicle without the rad cap for awhile to ensure that there was no air locks within the system? Water pump is located at the front of the engine behind the fan. Good Luck! hope this helps.
