Question about 2000 Dodge Durango

Floor Shifter The floor mounted shifter that shifts from 4wd to 2wd has come loose. It will not shift anymore and feels like it is not connected to anything. Is there a linkage pin or something that could have come out and how hard is it to get to?

Yes there is a linkage, mine just had this problem today, if yhe linkage fell off you need to buy a new one, if it came loose its the bushings, my bushings were carroded, when i touched them they dissolved in my hands, i believe the bushings are $5.99 at autozone, hope this helps

How can I put the suburban into 4x4


I have a 1994 4x4 Suburban. In mine, there's a stick on the hump in the floor, and I'm sure this is the case with yours too. This year model does not require that you get out and lock your wheel hubs. There are labels that are supposed to light up to tell you if you're in 2wd, 4wdHigh, or 2wdLow, but mine don't seem to work. If it's dark out and I can't see the labels, I just have to remember that 4wd High is all the way towards me, 4wd Low is all the way forward, and 2wd in sort of in the middle (but closer to me than the actual middle).

To shift into 4wd High (which is what you'll use for most purposes, like driving in bad weather), just pull that stick back towards you in one swift motion. You can do this while you're parked or while driving forward down the highway.

To shift back out of 4wd High and into 2wd, just push that stick forward a little bit, to where it was before.

To shift into 4wd Low (which is what you'll use only for extreme conditions, like off-road mudding or getting out of your driveway in super deep snow), you have to be stopped. You can NOT just shift into 4wd Low while you're going down the road. First, put it into Neutral (with the shifter on the steering column), Then push that stick on the floor all the way forward. Mine is hard to push, so I use my foot.

To shift back into 2wd from 4wd Low, you need to be stopped and in Neutral also. Pull the stick back towards you to the same position it was in before. (Not all the way towards you, or you'll be in 4wd High instead of 2wd.)

Loose automatic cloumn shifter.


On Many ford products. trucks and cars from around the mid 90's to present. the shift lever on an automatic transmission vehicle will become loose feeling. may not go into proper gear selected. If you lay on the floor and look under the dash. find where the shift cable connects to the shifter arm bracket which is mounted to the shift tube. if you grab it and it is loose ( you can wiggle it) there are 2 torx screws that need to be tightened. It is a very common problem and very easy to fix. I will usually remove the screws and use a thread locking compound (like Locktite) on the screws and reinstall them to stop it from happening again. I have done over 20 of them in the last few years. Sometimes one or both the screws can fall right out. if you have found a goldish colored Torx screw on your drivers side floor that is where they usually come from.

your 4 wheel shifter is hitting the floor now ..i made a notch in the floor so the shifter can go foward all the way..check your fan shroud to..fan is really close now

Will not shift into park.


Does the shifter feel loose or sloppy?
Are all other gears indicating correct and in there correct location?
How about manual 1st gear is it only operating 1st gear and the shifter is actually able to get down to 1st?

I believe you are going to find your shift linkage is loose at the base of the steering column where the shift cable attached to the shifter tube. there are 2 T30 torx screws there which often come loose and cause this concern. You can access this by laying upside down in the floor board. it is very tight and painful but possible. Check this and let me know.

Gears shifter will not engage the gears i think it is the trans linkage where is it located?


it's a cable under car . may be just loose connections. floor shift?

column shift?

check under hood first on driver side where transmision is. look for loose fasteners. then you might have to remove console for floor shift or plastic shrouds if column shift.

Check Linkage for the 4WD transfer case, between the shifter and the case. if it is a direct case mounted shifter, you may need to remove it and check for obstruction.

Have you tried to shift it to 4H while at a slow roll in N? Sometimes that used to work for me in my older floor mount 4WD truck. Give it try!

How to take off steering wheel.


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
If necessary for access or service remove the steering wheel. Except for on 1967-69 simulated wood wheels, be sure to use a steering wheel puller.
  1. Remove the nut/bolt from the upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate the coupling from the lower end of the steering column.
  2. If equipped with a column mounted shifter, disconnect the transmission control linkage from the column shift tube levers.
  3. If equipped with a floor shifter, disconnect the backdrive linkage.
  4. Disengage all of the electrical connectors from the steering column assembly.
  5. Remove the floor pan cover-to-floor screws, the floor seal, and the cover.
  6. Remove the steering column bracket-to-instrument panel nuts and carefully lower the column. If equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the shift position indictor pointer.
Once the steering column has been removed from the vehicle, be careful not to drop it (especially on it's end), lean on it or damage it in any way; the column is very susceptible to damage.
  1. Remove the column from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the steering column in the vehicle. If equipped with an automatic transmission, connect the shift position indicator pointer.
  2. Raise the column into position, then install the column bracket-to-instrument panel nuts and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  3. Install the floor pan seal and cover, then secure using the retaining screws.
  4. Engage all of the electrical connectors to the steering column assembly.
  5. If equipped with a floor shifter, connect the backdrive linkage.
  6. If equipped with a column mounted shifter, connect the transmission control linkage to the column shift tube levers.
  7. Connect the intermediate shaft coupling to the lower end of the steering column, then secure using the nut/bolt.
  8. If removed for access or service, align the matchmarks and install the steering wheel.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
