Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

Engine light on, should I be worried?

We just recently had the car serviced by our dealer to the tune of $2500. New shocks, CV boots, yadda yadda, They washed the engine too.
The car has been giving us some mysterious belch of white smoke when it starts up after it has sat for awhile, especially the first start of the morning. I've checked the battery terminals and they were powdery so I tried cleaning them (water and toothbrush) and reconnecting them. One day the car was totally dead and the wife called me in a panick... it wouldn't click or tease so I checked and sure enough one of the posts wasn't tight enough. I took some fine sandpaper to the post heads and reconnected and things seemed fine.
The car continues to give the big white cloud on start-up and after running some errand my wife mentioned the engine light is on, continously.
I really dread paying another dealer bill (we are one income and have only the one vehicle) unless it's really necessary.
Any advice appreciated.

Have auto zone (or most auto part store) plug in a scanner see what trouble code it is.

A metalic rattling noise from the wheels or brakes when going over rough and broken road surfaces

you possibly broke one of the brake pad tension springs, which is basically just a piece of spring steel that keeps the pads snug (not tight) against the rotors when you are not applying the brake.

also you could have a worn shock bushing, sway bar bushing, control arm bushing, yadda, yadda, yadda. Take it in to your local front end shop or general mechanic to better pinpoint the cause. good luck

Traction control light and abs light comes on when the brakes are engaged after dealer checked brake pads, they say they did not cause it. It will go off when engine is shut off then when driving will come...

the problem I have found with fords is that the stator ring that is on the cv shafts(drive Shafts) crack and will dislodge. this will cause an abs / traction control code. these can be spot welded back on to hold. Just push them back in place and don't worry abour the gap

Cv joint but the plastic thang that go around it

One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

Clicking in wheels whn turning either way .Also a LOUD poping sound when just driving straight ,But not all the time.

This is your CV joints in your drive shaft(s). Check your CV boots, you will probably find them dirty and greasy, and that grease has been slung in your wheel wells is from your broken CV boots.
I would suggest taking your vehicle to a reliable auto center, and getting a quote for repair.
Please let me know.

I hear a squelling or srapping sound from front passenger side wheel well when turning. Also when I drive wheel sounds like it is almost bouncing.

Check brakes, it could also be wheel bearing or shock/strut. Also might be normal. Is this new sound and did you recently make som change to hear this?

I have a 2006 dodge ram 2500 diesel and just recently got a leveling kit for the front and new shocks installed...but NOW i notice a clunking noise when i drive...i have no idea what it is..and i am...

I would try to change it to the original factory setup which is the way it was before the dealer messed with it .See if that helps .
They did something wrong when they installed it .

When turning there is a knocking type noise... friend says not shocks. Maybe in stearing gear box. Any ideas?

take it to the dealer. the steering shaft needs to be replaced with a larger one, dealer should cover cost if it is still under warrenty.

30,000 mile service

Do you have the owners manual? It will list what the manufacturer recommends at 30k. Better yet, ask the dealer what is included for the $600+. If you post the list to me, I'll give you my opinion on what I recommend to have done, and what I believe isn't necessary. I have driven many cars to very high mileage, and all of these vehicles never went to a dealer for service (new and used). I feel the many service checks are for people that abuse their car, have money to burn, and want to support the dealerships service department. Honda makes a quality vehicle, if you change fluids and filters, you will enjoy it for many miles/years. Hope to hear from you with list.
