    I attempted to replace the timing belt on my daughter's S70 '99 and gave up. First, did not have the right tool to relieve the tension fromthe serpentine belt. Second, was not sure how to remove the crankshaft pulley. I used a 32mm socket and turned the crankshat clockwise to align the timing marks.



    Question:

    Do I have to block the crankshaft to remove the 32mm nut and how can I block it? Or, do I just turn the socket with a breaker counter-clockwise and it will do the trick.



    What torque value should I use to put the nut back on the crankshaft?

    95-960....Need to replace the waterpump,Timing belt,tensioner pulley and idler..the marks on the cams and crank don't seem to align even before i dismantle it.When I think I have TDC the marks on the crank don't align with whats on the block.I'm not sure how to remove tension from the pulley..Please can someone help???

This is the timing belt replacement procedure to 1999 Vovlo V70
with the B5254s engine

1) Lift power steering and anti-freeze resevoirs slightly and disconnect electrical connector for antifreeze sensor. Then carefully lift both resevoirs and position it on top of the valve cover.

2) Relieve the tension from the serpentine belt tensioner pulley and remove the serpentine belt.

3) Remove the screw holding the plastic timing belt cover and carefully remove the cover.

4) Locate the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys. I highlighted the marks with paint to make them easier to see. I took a dab of white touch up paint and put it on each mark, then waited a minute and then wiped the excess paint carefully, leaving a white line for the mark. The mating marks for the cam gears is on the upper cam gear cover. The marks are rectanular cutouts on the underside of the cover. I was unable to line up the marks unless standing on my head so I extended the marks to the outside of the cover with a white painted dot. This trick made life much easier.

5) Reinstall the timing gear cover.

6) Place a 32mm socket on the crankshaft pulley and connect a breaker bar to the socket. Slowly rotate the engine crankshaft (clockwise) until the camshaft timing marks are aligned with the marks on the gear cover. (I preferred to do this job with the spark plugs installed. I found it easier to keep the engine in time by using the engine compression).

7) Remove the vibration damper by removing the 32mm nut and remove all of the 10mm screws. Carefully pry the pulley from the shaft. There is an alignment pin which allows the pulley to be installed only one way. With the vibration damper removed you can now check the timing alignment with the crankshaft and it's witness mark.

8) Remove the small timing belt shield from the underside of the crankshaft. This shield is helt in place with 2 screws.

9) Loosen the ttiming belt tension and remove the old timing belt.

10) This is a good time to check the waterpump for any signs of wear or leaks. Mine was leaking after 101,000 miles. I also replaced the tensioning pulley and used Volvo OEM parts. (The old Volvo parts lasted 100,000 miles, that is good enough for me).

11) Reverse the procedure for installing the new timing belt.

12) After the belt is installed and properly tensioned, put the breaker bar with the 32mm socket onto the vibration damper and rotate the engine (clockwise) slowly until your timing marks are again aligned. If they are not, remove and reinstall the belt. Don't get frustrated just think of all of the money you have saved by doing this job yourself.

Need to no after how many miles we have to change the timing belt


It is recommended that a timing belt should be change every 100,000km. Honda's and Acura's especially. Whenever the water pump is changed, it is also wise to change the timing belt too as it is all in one spot, and VS. In some cars, [Acura's], when the timing belt breaks, it also can tear your valves in your engine apart, so I hope that this answers your question

Timing belt inspection is in order, and if the timing belt is replaced, then the water pump should be replaced also. I have inspected timing belts on many engines that have over 150,000 miles on them and found the timing belt was perfect. It is hard to say why some vehicles wear out a belt moe than others, but replacing the belt is good insurance. As for the plugs, I would just replace them. They will wear out sooner than any timing belt.

Your timing belt should be replaced every 50-70,000 miles. Carmakers have specified the replacement intervals for timing belts. In this database you will find these timing belt replacement intervals along with a little technical information regarding the valve configuration - interference or non-interference. In an interference engine, the valves and piston share the same air space. They never touch, unless your timing belt breaks or skips, and this is a catastrophic failure that requires removing the head and replacing bent valves. Non-interference engines do not risk this contact if the timing belt goes. Hey the water pump just went in my 1998 toyota rav4 2litre. how do i go about replacing it ? i cant find anywhere on here


Your water pump is driven by your timing belt, can not be seen with out remove timing belt cover, to replace you will also have to remove timing belt, if timing belt has not been replace best to replace it now also, timing belt should be replace every 60,000 miles. make sure before removing timing belt that you mark where all pulley gear's are at, so when you install the timing belt back on there in the same place as before you move the timing belt, no need to mark water pump gear,good luck,hope this was very helpful.

Average replacement mileage for a timing belt is around 60,000 miles. Many cars I have purchased had over 100,000 miles on them and had never had the belt replaced. Try to use original equipment belts or high quality after market belts when replacing. Cheap belts will not last as long and could cause serious problems if neglected(example cheap alternator belts will squeak, stretch easily, and not hold up.). I always replace all the belts when doing a job this intense. If your car has high miles it is a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time you do the timing belt.

Check Your Timing Belt
  • Check your owner's manual for the recommended mileage for replacing your timing belt. Replacement for Hyundai Sonatas is 60,000 miles.
  • Locate the timing belt and examine it for breaks, damage, fraying, worn spots or looseness.
  • Inspect the belt for cracked or missing teeth that may be the result of foreign material collecting between them.
  • Determine if the timing belt damage is on both sides. Single-side damage may be caused by the timing belt's guide.
    Remove Your Timing Belt

  • Disengage the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the tensioner arm to the right 14° and take the timing belt off its pulley.
  • Take out the coolant pump, idler, tensioner and crankshaft pulleys and both timing belt covers.
  • Remove the engine's mounting insulator and mount bracket and the auto tensioner.
  • Align the crankshaft's timing mark so the first cylinder piston is at "Top Dead Center" (TDC). The camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover timing marks also should align.
  • Unfasten the timing belt.


    Replace Your Timing Belt

  • Examine the cam and crankshaft sprockets. Replace if there is excessive wear or other damage.
  • Position the new timing belt on the sprockets.
  • Relax the timing belt tensioner so it can make contact with the belt. Adjust the belt to the tension recommended in your vehicle owner's manual. Also align the timing indicators on the cam, crank and other sprockets.
  • Return the engine to the 0° mark by turning it two revolutions in the direction of travel.
  • Secure the timing belt cover and reinstall whatever was removed to access the timing cover.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable and any other items that were disconnected.
  • Start the engine and look for leaks

When should you replace timing belt on Toyota Sienna van? It's a 1999 model with 210,000 kms on it and I need a new water pump. Should I replace the timing belt at the same time?


Somewhere between 90,000 mil;es and 120,000 miles you should do your timing belt. But first make sure you do not have a timg chain. If you have a timing chain, you never have to change it at all.

I need instructions on replacing the timing belt


1. Remove the Alternator Belt.
2. Remove the Water Pump Pulley
3. Remove the Air Conditioner Belt and Power Steering Belt.
4. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley.
5. Remove the timing belt cover
6. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.
7. Remove the Timing Belt.
8. (If Replacing) Remove Idler Pulley.
Installation is reverse of removal. Keep a close eye on the timing marks on the cam sprockets to make sure you don't knock anything out of whack.

I would strongly recommend replacing the water pump while you are replacing the timing belt. (The water pump usually comes in the timing belt kit.) Otherwise you are going to have to do this all over again when your water pump goes out. Good Luck.
