It has an open differential it will only spin one side either right or let depending on traction and a few things if it is spinning one front tire in dirt mud or snow everything is probly just fine

do you have auto locking hubs? if so save yourself the hassles i did not and buy a decent set of manual hubs.my 1989 4 wheel just gave up one day..no wear on axles..front drive shaft spinning but no action..i replace auto locking hubs and re assembled to no avail...no answers why either...have pulled it all apart and put back together many times and no change, only to be told to put manuals in and live happily ever after!!done ....and done!

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

Transfer case locks into low gear but front wheels do not pull

You have to have your front hubs locked in for four-wheel drive to work

Ford F150 lost 4 wheel drive 2003 FX4

Take the hubs apart, inspect them, and clean them, especially the one that you heard a clunk, something might have broke in the automatic hub lock. Make sure everthing gets put back exactly the same, or you'll have more problems. If that doesn't work, then there is something wrong somewhere in the transfer case.

I have a 1988 chevy pickup. The 4 wheel drive does not work. the transfer case is kicking in but the hubs are not. The front shaft is spinning in 4 wheel drive bu the hubs are not engaging

OK If you have manual locking hubs, one could be acting up. Jack the rear wheels off the ground and block the front wheels. Be sure you have the trucks back axel supported, not just on jacks! Then, with a person in the drivers seat, put it in gear. The 'driver' will turn the steering from lock to lock, while you check [from outside the truck, not under]] for the shaft at the front wheels that is spinning. This is the prob ! Frankster016
