Changed both tanks in my 90 F-250 4x4 last year. Get a repair manual Haynes or Chilton, for $20 or so online or at parts store. I have both which have good diagrams and tips for gas tank replacement and everything else. Some big parts store chains have some of this info online.
Gas is to $$$$$ to leak any, besides, you don't want to blow up when someone throws a cigarette under your truck.. good luck, countrycurt0

For safety and to make the job easier, run both tanks down to totally empty (carry a can of gas w/ you so you don't get stuck). Even a few gallons of gas left in tank is more weight to lower tank, and you don't want gas spilling out on you or a drop light. Careful of fumes even if tank is empty, they are very dangerous as they can blow up easily. No smoking obviously, and careful not to drag the tank out on concrete floor (sparks!) countrycurt0

My 91 f250 gas switch when swiched from fr to back shows gas in rear(and gas is in tank 3/4 full ) but moter dies sounds like fuel pump is operating but will not run

There are several things that I would check, Richard. The most obvious is a fuel line leak from the rear tank. Another possibility is a kinked neoprene hose near the tank's fuel pump. It the rear tank has not been used for a while the tank may have some water in it. Try a bottle or two of water remover (isopropyl alcohol). If none of those things are found, then you should get a fuel pump pressure test.

Fuel Gas Tank Reservoir Selector Valve leaking when using front tank

The seal in the selector valve is bad on the front side.
Replace the valve or rebuild it.
Disconnect the battery ground cable before doing any work around gasoline.

The gas gauge for the front tank on my 1992 F150 is stuck past full

You probably have a ground wire not making contact to ground on the front tank sending unit. OR the sending unit itself inside the tank is faulty. Either way, when a gas guage goes to full all the time (empty or full), this indicates that NO ground is available for the sending unit.

My 1988 dodge ram custom 50 I think is having fuel pump problems. It chokes going mainly up hills. or could it be the fuel filter?

There are fuel lines inside the gas tank. Over time they can rust causing them to break or leak. You have one of two options, first you can pull the tank and replace the line. The second option is to keep the gas tank fuel level above the leak. And the fact that this happens mainly when going up a hill, suggests the leak is lower in the tank. All the gas shifts to the rear of the tank and exposes the leak. NOTE: The leak is probably just above the level you usually keep the tank filled to. So if you keep it at 1/4 that's where you'll find it etc....

Look on the top of the tank and i think you will find a perished or split rubber hose so it only leaks when tank is full

I'm looking for a diagram for my 1997 GMC Jimmy. The gas tank is leaking and I want to see all the parts that I might have to order.

This is hard to say with out removing the tank, you will need a tank and sometimes the sending unit and pump while tank is down the only other thing would be the fuel lines, if the lines are rusted and dont come loose then you will neeed to make new ones, heres a couple of diagrams to help you, take note there are two style tanks depending on if you have a 2 door or 4 door, one mounts in the rear and the other on the side, i also belive you have plastic fuel lines and shouldnt have a problem with them, while the tank is out the pump asm, which comes complete with sending unit and pump should be replaced, hope this is helpful, good luck.johnjohn2_1.jpgjohnjohn2_2.jpgjohnjohn2_3.jpgjohnjohn2_4.jpg

Fuel leaks from rear tank to front.

The leaking from one tank to another was covered by a recall from Ford. Not sure if they still foot the bill for installation of the required check valves. These are still available from the dealership. The rear one is the hardest to install. The check valve can be installed without pulling the rear tank. As for your front sender I would clean all of the connections to the sender and make sure it has a decent ground. If it still only reads at the 1/4 tank level you will have to replace the sender to rectify the problem.

F150 dual fuel tank problem

I have to say i'm only guessing, but it sounds like the valve that switches the flow of gas from one tank to the other must be sticking part way open, or bypassing or something, and anything your engine doesn't require, is being returned to the front tank, instead of the rear.

  1. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove the fuel pump access plate beneath the rear seat.
  4. Label and disconnect the fuel hoses and electrical harness.
  5. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle.
  6. Label all fuel lines for installation reference.
  7. On 240SX models, remove the exhaust center tube, driveshaft, differential carrier and rear suspension member.
  8. Disconnect the fuel filler hose and vent hose.
  9. Remove the fuel tank protector assembly.
  10. Remove the fuel tank band retaining bolts while supporting the fuel tank with a transmission jack.
  11. Slowly lower the tank assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the tank assembly on the vehicle.
  2. Install the fuel tank retaining bands and tighten the bolts to 20-27 ft. lbs. (26-36 Nm).
  3. Install the fuel tank protector assembly.
  4. Connect the fuel filler hose and vent hose. Tighten the hose clamps securely.
  5. On 240SX models, install the exhaust center tube, driveshaft, differential carrier and rear suspension member.
  6. Lower the rear of the vehicle.
  7. Connect the fuel hoses and electrical harness.
  8. Install the fuel pump access plate beneath the rear seat.
  9. Fill the fuel tank with a few gallons of fresh fuel.
  10. Pressurize the fuel system and check for leaks.
I hope this helps... If the exhaust as been changed or modified it might be necessary to loosen.
