Just put a new battery in my 98 outback. Can't start the car until I find the security button that is supposed to solve this problem. I have looked under the dash and don't see any kind of button. What is it wired to? Is it possible that there isn't a button? Is there any way around this? I bought the car used and have no remote key (though the car is wired for one)

Thanks. I think my switch is missing a part. I found the "black hood" but there was no push button inside. Only something that looked like a metal screw. To activate it I had to insert a tiny allen wrench in the center. That did the trick. In case anyone else is having this problem, I found the switch bolted close to the fuse panel. It sits inside a black plastic hood. The "button" is a gold colored screw that holds it to the frame. It does not look anything like a switch and it does not move or toggle when you touch it.

You have to "reset" the security system. just lock/unlock the car through the remote door opener...
If you don't have the remotes, you can try to find the switch under the dash, drivers side, to the left of the steering column. Even experienced Subaru guys can sometimes have trouble finding the switch. It is usually at the end of a lot of wire, a push button type switch, white or red maybe, and most of the time the wiring is rolled up and tucked away somewhere. We have alot of customers who cant find the button, so don't get too frustrated if you cant either.

Why after changing plugs wires car won't start it turns over but then does nothing and when turning over it drains the battery battery was unhooked when this was all done. Any one got any Ideas

did you go plug for plug and HT lead for HT lead or did you just pull the lot and then replaced the HT leads
If you did this it is very possible that the firing order is messed up
next when you pull a battery you energize the immobilizer system
you will probably have to use a scan tool to reset the system
make sure battery terminals and posts are shiny clean and tight

Battery, starter, and alternator good, but car won't start, or hesitates to start. What is wrong?

Check your fuses first under the hood and under the dash. Better hope they blew before you did major damage. If you find the ones that blew check what they ran and start checking out your electrical system in that area.Hope whatever started burning was just hot wires and not a ruined electrical system. If there is extra stereos wires or security systems installed (not factory) check that area and if possible disconnect them that may take care of the problem

How to reset security system in 2002 vw passat

Unlock the drive's door twice with the key, turning CCW each time. If that does not work, then remove the battery for a half hour and turn the headlights on for 10 seconds or so.

Hello, I own a 1998 Mercury Sable sedan. For some reason my signal lights don't work properly.. only the left one works and its always on.. so i have to put on hazards so people don't think i'm turning...

Sounds like you got the procedure straight out of the book Cliff. Except you shouldn't have to worry about waiting for the battery for so long, the wiring to your multifunction switch isn't connected to your airbag. Also by the time you get to removing those wires you might even be approaching the half hour mark anyway. Good Luck don't be afraid to ask if you have any more questions.

Took battery out now key wont start car security light stays on

Try leaving the battery unhooked for 12 hours. The Passlock system that GM uses is a real pain sometimes. If you get lucky, 12 hours without power will reset the memory and you'll be able to use your key again. This worked for me once on a Chevy Venture I was installing a remote starter into.
