Change the brake light switch behind your brake. You can get it at the dealership for less than $10. Takes a few minutes to install.

what car, you never said? NOR YEAR?
park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

no car/year, you get the generic answer.
there is a park lockout DEFEATER on most cars, (never on new cars, due to federal bs)

on the shift console, see the defeat device.
the operators guide covers this. its for EMERGENCIES.
pick one.
http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/jeep/

the A/T box,
Brakes + handle button press, unlocks BTSI

on 2005 and up , no bypass
if the key gets locked too, that tells you what is bad , on newer jeeps
on newer jeeps read this
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=366251

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.
Folks in Sanfranciso, just roll eyes at you, new in town>?

now the grand cherroke,, why not post car model, and year, dang.

quote 2010 oper guide, get one.
Brake/Transmission Interlock Manual Override Your vehicle may be equipped with a shift lock manual override. The manual override may be used in the event that the shift lever should fail to move from PARK with the ignition switch in the ON position and the brake pedal pressed. To operate the shift lock manual override, perform the following steps: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine. 2. Firmly set the parking brake. 3. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully remove the shift lock manual override cover, which is located on the PRNDL bezel. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Using the screwdriver, reach into the manual override opening. Press and hold the shift lock lever down. Interlock Manual Override end quote.
no all jeeps have this,

My son's 1998 Ford Escort will not shift out of park if it is started or not. My husband has replaced the brake switch but it will still not shift out of park

had the same problem a few months back. right next to your stick shift [automatic] there is a little cilrcle. pop that peice of plastic out and stick a screw driver streight down. there is a little flapper that is conected to your breaks by a cable. it wont let you take the car out of park without your foot on the breaks, the cable may be broke. if you push the flapper down with the screw driver then you should be able to get the car out of park. if that works you know that your cable from breaks to that flapper is bad. i didnt replace mine i just drive around with a screwdriver stuck in the hole. you kindda have to fish around with the screwdriver to get it in the right spot but that should solve your problem. i pulled up to the pumps to get gas and when i went to leave the car wouldnt go out of park, so some guy came and showed me what to do and it has worked fine sense. good luck

Won't shift out of Park, even with ignition on and brake pedal depressed. Steering column is not locked.

There is a small hole near the shifter enough to stick a long screwdriver. Stick a screw driver in there, and press it down, this will unlock it untill you can fix the problem permanently, at least you can use the car for the meantime.

Car shift seems locked

probably due to safety on brake pedal, it will not allow you to move selectoer from park.

You have a blown brake lamp fuse.
Start the vehicle, depress the brake, and have someone observe to see if you have brake lights. No brake lights = no removal from park W/O pushing the over-ride switch.
FYI: Brake lamp fuse failures are most always created by a faulty trailer wire harness.
