Replacement of the starter

Hi Peter, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Peter, replacing a starter is easy, there are a few things to remember. (1) Always unhook the negative battery cable before removing the starter. (2) Be sure to reinstall the spacer if it has one, if it doesn't have a spacer no need to worry. (3) Some other things may need to be removed to get the starter out. NOTE: Some do, some don't, a good rule of thumb is to try an remove the starter first to see what must be removed, if anything. Some starters are held on by 2 bolts and others have 3 bolts. You need to remove the nut holding the positive battery cable to the back of the starter, then remove the wire and connector from the back of the starter, then remove the bolts holding the starter in position. Take the starter out and install the new one. That's all there is to it. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website here: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

Removal and installation of starter of 2002 mercury mountainer

Here's the generic starter replacement directions.
Engine should be cool, parked on level surface. Remove negative cable from battery. Remove electrical connections at starter (Sometimes starter may need to be partially removed to access all electrical connections.) Remove any brackets, parts, or accessories that obstruct access to the starter motor mounting bolts. Remove mounting bolts and remove starter. Clean the mounting surface, and install new starter and tighten the mount bolts evenly. Replace wires on starter. Connect battery.
Good luck.

I am ignorant and cant find the starter

Don't feel that way Brian. Not everyday you need to locate the starter on a car.
Even the trade guys need to look for stuff on cars. It's easier for us when we have the information.

Anyway, getting on to your problem.
It is at the front of the engine down low beside the oil pan.
It is even hard to get a look at on a hoist from below. Lots of stuff in the way on this one.
Here is a diagram.

To replace will need some time and patience.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front lower air deflector.
  4. Remove the starter solenoid S terminal nut.
  5. Remove the starter solenoid S terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
  6. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
  7. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal wiring harness connector at the starter motor.
  8. Remove the torque converter cover.
  9. Remove the starter bolts. Remove the shims, if necessary.
  10. Remove the starter motor.
  11. Reverse procedure to reinstall.
There you are. I hope the job goes well.
Ask me if you need further help with this.

  4. Remove the starter cable from terminal B located on the back of the solenoid.
  5. Remove the black/white wire from the S (solenoid) terminal.
  6. Remove the two bolts that mount the starter to the transaxle assembly.

Need to replace starter on a 1986 Camaro, but cannot get the old starter past the exhaust pipe.

Removing the starter
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect all wiring from the starter solenoid. Replace each nut as the connector is removed (as thread sizes differ from connector to connector). Note or tag the wiring positions for installation.
  4. Remove the bracket from the starter and the two mounting bolts. On engines with a solenoid heat shield, remove the front bracket upper bolt and detach the bracket from the starter.
  5. Remove the front bracket bolt or nut. Lower the starter front end first, and then remove the unit from the car.
These are the steps for removing the starter on the Camaro. Did you remove the bracket? Hope this helped and best wishes.

I need help changing my starter i need to know how to drop the engine so i can get to the starter

Here are instructions as well as links to some helpful diagrams.

This starter motor removal procedure is time consuming. An alternate method of removing the starter would be to remove the engine fan(s) and radiator, then remove the starter motor from the top of the engine. If you chose to go this route, radiator and fan removal can be found in Section 3 of this manual.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. If equipped with A/C, perform the following:
    1. Use a floor or jack stand to securely support the engine and transaxle assembly so they will not rotate.
    2. Remove the front engine mount bolt from the insulator and front crossmember mounting bracket.
    3. Carefully lower the front of the engine, rotating the engine forward allowing more space for easier access to the starter. For easier removal, do not remove the wiring from the starter at this time.
    4. Remove the 2 starter motor-to-transmission housing mounting bolts.
    5. Remove the starter and solenoid assembly from the transmission housing. Position the starter accordingly for access to the wiring.
    6. Remove the positive battery cable nut and remove the positive battery and alternator output wire from the starter. The wiring is shown in the accompanying figure.
    7. Detach the push-on solenoid connector. Pull back on the slide and push down on the rear tab to release the lock.
    8. Position the starter vertically so the pinion end faces downward, then remove the starter motor through the bottom of the vehicle. It may be necessary to move the A/C lines aside slightly to maneuver the starter out of the vehicle.
