Jumping out of gear is usually a worn detent plunger, most vehicles have two detent plungers, one betewwen the sprocket and the shaft it slides on in the gearbox and sometimes another at the point where the gear stick connects to the remote head.
The first one to wear is usually at the remote head and it doesn't neccesarily have to wear it can simply be out of adjustment.
If you can rest your hand lightly against the stick and stop it jumping out then I would suggest that it is only out of adjustment.
If however it kicks out hard and hits your hand back then you are looking at changing the detent plunger and spring.
I assume it does this when you are pushing the car up through the revs rather than taking it easy.

Could you be more specific. Is this a manual tranny or automatic? If manual does it go in, then kick back out, or will it not go in at all?

If 4th gear is good, no slipping, then your transmisson is toast. Replace with a known good working one.

Slips out of 1st and 5th

Have you checked your transmission fluid level and your transmission filter? That's a common cause of slippping.

1st gear slipping at start. reverse and other gears fine. shifts between gears fine. if i start off slow it wont slip. 01 rodeo 4 cyl. also eng light has been on for 1 yr. has 120000 miles.

Have you checked the trani fluid ?
It could be slipping just enough to notice in 1st gear beause that is the most resistance..
A slip is a slip..
Or it could be that the bands are warn in only first gear - wich would cause damage before long..

Slipping in 1at gear

just check the buttom of the pulleys or buttom of the car for leaks or tensioner pulley , sometimes bearings in tensioner wear out i had similar issue with gear slipping it happened to be a leaky water pump and antifreeze getting on the pulleys while the car is running, causing belt to slip and tranny slip feel similar as you described , i replaced belt and water pump and no more issue

Sure sounds like the torque converter is bad to me. Usually after the fluid gets hot, this problem shows up. Specially since it's in ALL gears......sorry o;(>
