Question about 1998 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Transmission issues Okay..I went and had a new catalytic converter put on my 98 saturn a few days ago. They told me that I had a transmission leak. I was driving down the road and suddenly it wouldn't shift (its automatic by the way) and now it's whining and sputtering (like it wants to die). I checked the fluid level and it was low so I added. It shifts now, but the whining and sputtering are still there, what else could this be?

Could be transmission. Or a plugged catalytic converter, or the rear differential. Does it get worse when warmed up? Is there grinding/unusual noises? Where does the sound come from? Try starting out with the transmission in first and manually shift up the gears as you drive. Does it seem to slip? I assume its an automatic. Depending on your level of experience, they can be complicated to replace yourself.

Car won't shift out of 1st gear and PRNDL lights are all on.

hmmm it seems as if the diagnostic system may not be reporting it but it seems like it is telling you in a way its unable to sense what gear the trans is in so the diagnostic board is confused on what to do with the trans as if something around the trans isnt working correctly maybe a shift solenoid has gone bad or another related issue around the trans is present

Transmission no pressure

Nope, no positives. It does sound like the pump has failed. If the stop leak didn't help seal any internal seals that may have failed, it looks like the transaxle will have to come out for repairs or another replacement.
I don't think the torque converter ever makes noise when bad.
I would think your diagnosis of a bad pump is correct, given no movement of fluid in the cooler lines. Kudos for checking the lines-cool idea, I never thought of that.

I have a 2002 Ford Escape. It ran perfectly until I took it for a car wash and it rained hard the next day. I then had rough idling, laboured acceleration and I threw a Code saying I was missing in 2 and...

I think someone gave you wrong information. You know what a rough idle and a misfire you just went through it. And you went through a emission test and passed. Here the thing about the emission test they do it 2 ways if you went on a dyno. The dyno loads the engine and pressurize the system. It looks for pressure failure, like sparkvoltage leaks, and like transmission pressure line and test its ability to maintain gear ratio at an approprate load. Then the dyno heats the vehicle now it looks for operating temperature and that all sensor are within fuel control and do not go out of range. Here the thing. 5000k and 4000k it takes that much to get it to cruising speed. and once there its okay. You are describing a transmission slip. And catalytic costing 4 thousand. From the dealer? If the catalytic are clog there is no way to get it to cruising speed , No youll loose power and the vehicle will keep slowing down. If the transmission is slipping it will slip in a variety of ways One way is what you described. It will 5000k and 4000k to get it to cruising speed then its okay. And not do highway speed , catalytic is about 1200. transmission are 4000k.Plus Ford tried to sue states that put the vehicle on dynos, due to the high trans failures(this is on going debate)

Will it damage the car if I have a slow transmission leak to drive an hour and a half away as long as I check the transmission fluid before I leave and when I get to my destination?

My guess would depend on how bad the transmission leak is. If you notice a couple of drips in your vehicle's parking space overnight then, no It won't damage the transmission to drive it. However if there is a steady stream of transmission fluid when you are driving then, no don't drive it until the leak is repaired.

The shifter/transmission on my manual 5 spd 1999 Saturn SL1

This just happen to me a few weeks ago. If you take out the center piece in the car you should be able to see that the actual shifter is no longer connected to the rod which goes into the transmission. It is an easy problem to fix, however it is not cheap. I was told that you have to buy a complete new kit($250.00) for the shifter, however my dad gave me a different solution. He took some wire, and made a spider web type thing to keep it connected. On my car it was a small round plastic piece that broke, but I cannot remember what it was actually called. This little piece is not available through Saturn by itself, only through a complete kit. Please ask questions if this is not clear enough. Thanks :)

RPM shot up to 4.5/5 while idling

I have a 2003 Acura TLS, bought new Oct 2002 currently with only 42600 KM (real low) My problem appears to be the same. I noticed specificly on warm days after 30 min driving, when coming to a stop, the idle was about 3500 RPM. Parked the car, turned it off. When starting up again, RPM stayed at 3200, also couldn't put into drive (possibly safety mechanism to prevent damage to transmission). After 30 min when cooled, was able to start again - OK.
I brought it to the dealer thinking possibly connected to FAULTY TRANSMISSION". There was a special extended warranty issued by ACURA >>> I believe it also includes 2002's. Your Dealer should check into it again.
My dealer, ACURA LAVAL (in Que, Canada) seemed to look at nothing else than the transmission. In fact, 2 days after not hearing from him, he told me that they had already ordered a NEW Transmission which is being put in as I write.

Hope this is helpful to any Owner/Dealer who reads this

Best Wishes from the Great White North- Canada

97 Honda Accord SE 2.2 Transmission Problems

you cannot use a trans from a 98...and also, i recommend replaceing the torque converter as well with the next trans u install...also, the trans u put in may have been bad as well..i suggest u replace this next one with a remanufactured trans and torque in california, there is a place called H&A transmissions that rebuild Honda and Acura trans only..they are very good and they usually can get one fairly quick...wherever u get the next one, just get a reman or rebuilt one with a warranty...u dont want to have to do it again...
