Question about 2000 Ford Focus

After driving for an hour or to at 60 mph on the highway the car starts sputtering and jerking and losing power, then eventually shuts down. After 10 minutes it starts up and runs fine for about 40 minutes then happens again.

I'm having the same problem with my Ford Focus 01. Have you taken it to Ford. Won't be surprised if they tell you that nothing is wrong with your car. They keep giving it back to me for me to see the same problem happen again. I've heard it could be a number of things... bad coil, bad plugs, bad fuel pump, the catilytic converter... my fuel filter has been replaced, and i had a complete tune-up but of course, the cheap things didn't help. Basically, nothing is coming up on the diagnosis computer, and it's quite irritating. I'm about to buy another car.

I had the same issues for most of last summer. Finally, I replaced the Plug Wires and the car has been working like a charm since. The other problem I found was that I had the wrong plugs. It seems there are only two types for the Focus, the local parts guys quoted me the incorrect part number and my fuel efficiency went to ****.

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. Some focus' have an extended warranty on them from Ford due to so many problems. Fuelumps won't always set trouble codes.

Have 97 gmc suburban. Has a jerk to it when I'm crusein on highway and from time to time seems as if im hitting a bunch of little bumps an it boggs down. I let off gas it stops what could this b?

Could be the fuel filter. Watch the speed it happens. IE.. Ok at 50 MPH, hit 60 MPH it starts jerking. Clogged filers will give the pressure need, just not the volume of fuel need at higher speeds.

Try the fuel pump Relay. I had the exact same problem and thats all it was. It will eventually stop sending fuel at all. The relay is under the hood on the passenger side front corner. Ther are I think 5 there, the fuel pump relay is all the way to the right looking down into the engine compartment. Hope this Helps

Plug or restricted catalitic converter, removing the o2 sensor and installing a back pressure gauge will verify.

if you don't have a gas cap on the car or if it is on too loosely then that is a possibility. Only other thing I could think of would be water in your fuel. You may try a bottle of "heat" (I think that is how you spell it) at your local auto parts store and chunk it in the gas can. if there were any problems with water that should be the cure.

Computer firmware needs upgrade

Take your car to a Chrysler dealer shop and have them update the transmission program. As your tranny wears it loses it shift point and stutters between 40 - 45 mph looking for the right gear to change to..Had same problem in 94 Concorde and 94 T&C minivan.Reprogramming tranny fixed both cars.
