2003 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo Engine Light

I just passed 95,000 miles on my Passat and the engine light came on. I don't feel or see anything wrong. Someone told me this may come on automatically after a certain number of miles and there's a reset button. Is this true?

Clean out the air screen in front of the air box and also try to replace the air filter and clean the MAF sensor

The engine light usually refers to the transmission or a fuse has blown somewhere in the car. I had a mazad 929 and the light would come on when I hit a bump. I drove it for 7 years like that and sold it as I did 310,000km. If your not sure right up a few mechanic repairs and ask before you take it somewhere. If the light comes on when you do something like use indicators, try and keep an eye on. Could be something simply. Make sure your oil levels are right as well.

Low oil pressure

Kenny, The Volkswagen 1.8 seem to be prone to oil sludge in these years according to the forums on line. So if sludge is a problem, it could be partial plugged oil pump pickup causing light to flicker, and also may have cause piston rings to wear premature allowing excess oil to pass and show smoke from exhaust. Have engine checked, diagnosed and estimate for repair by a good Tech. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

My 2003 passat check engine light came on at exactly 95,000 miles---there seems to be no problem with the vehicle---was the light programmed to come on no matter what at that mileage?

usually is for a service maintenance so that the dealer can do a full lubrication of engine parts trans etc. same issues with Mercs. you should take it it will cost you approx 200-500 dollars is worth it to avoid issues in the near future

I would check the oil pressure sensor and the oil pump itself. You can take the sensor out and use a mechanical gauge to check the oil pressure. If the oil pressure is within specs, you need a new sensor, if not, you need a new pump.

If you are not driving far no problem. If you are just put a quart of oil in it until you get to the station.

The flashing is telling you that the engine is mis-firing, the dealer will run a test to determine the cylinder that is mis-firing, chances are it is something simple
