Question about 2004 Cadillac CTS

3 Answers

Transmission problems I need some suggestions on what to do.  I have 101,000 miles on my car and have noticed recently my transmission is not always shifting into the final gear.  It makes whining noises and has gotten worse over the past month.  It shifts into the first 2 gears ok, but then just won't shift into overdrive.  Most people I've asked suggest just driving it until it goes out completely - so that is what I am thinking about doing.  What should I expect when it goes out completely? Will it just stop shifting into all gears?  What are the ramifications of continuing to drive it at highway speeds when it won't go into overdrive?

I believe overdrive is out .. At 60 mph the RPM is 2000.. I think it should be about 1200 RPM .. And you can here a roaring noise at the Shifter..What do you think is going on .. Car has 71000 miles

First off, I'd try changing the fluid and filter in the transmission. I know a lot of cars claim "lifetime fluid" - it's BS. Believe me, even the lifetime fluids get very dirty. Change out the fluid and filter, and you could even add some Lucas stabilizer to it - that may well help cure the problems.

When the transmission goes completely, it may lock up the drive wheels, sending you into a careening slide, or it may kick out to neutral and coast to a stop. It's also possible that if it flat-out blows, it could fragment inside and you'd hear what sounds like bolts in a blender as you coast to a standstill.

Discounting the transmission blowing up, and just looking at driving in a drive gear other than overdrive, you're looking at more heat in the transmission due to the higher gear RPM, shorter fluid life, possible slippage of the bands down the road due to heat, and of course decreased gas mileage due to the engine running at higher RPM.

If you continue to drive it on the highway with out it shifting into overdrive than you take a chance on running your engine... especially if you have aluminum heads on it. they will heat up and warp so when you do decide to fix the transmission than you will have to replace the heads as well. I suggest that you get the transmission replaced or rebuilt. in the long haul it would be better. You can expect the transmission to rev up and not go any where when it does go out.... You will be able to put you foot to the floor and it might move an inch but not farther.......... you'll no when it goes..... Any ways I would have it rebuilt or replaced... and if it goes into all the other gears you might beable to take it to a shop and have them look at it... you might just have a vaccumm line off or a plug that is loose not allowing it to shift...

Usually, if you shut the heater off, then the temperature will climb. The interior heater will actually assist in cooling the engine's coolant.
Subaru head gaskets rarely ever fail by the way.
First, pressure test the cooling system and make sure you have no leaks. Also check the radiator cap for condition and fitment. Then check and/or replace the engine thermostat.
Subarus are generally speaking, extremely reliable vehicles and don't often show these types of issues.

I would go ahead and do the transmission service, I see no need at that mileage for the other suggestions.
