O2 sensor is usually located on the manifold of most 4 cylinder engines they are normally a one wire connection. you will need the following:

New oxygen sensor....these can be really expensive.
a open end wrench that fits the O2 sensor, or an O2 sensor socket and a ratchet to loosen and tighten the O2 sensor

Start by driving the car to get the car warm o2 sensors can be very hard to get out if they are cold.

if you think you might burn yourself on something hot put thick gloves on, you will have to disconnect the on wire on the o2 sensor, unfortunately you cant wear gloves while doing this, so be extremely careful as the exhaust will be very hot.

After wire disconnected loosen o2 sensor by going counter clock wise using either a o2 sensor socket or a appropriate wrench

while wearing gloves, after the sensor is loose enough unscrew by hand, remember it is still very hot.

you can let engine cool down now if you want.

put new o2 sensor in tightening it firmly and replug the electrical connector back up.

if your check engine light does not go out take to autozone and have them reset your computer, or you can disconnect your battery cables for 20+ minutes and this resets the computer also.

no, you couldn't check it all by yourself. it would be better to certified mechanic. but for me, you don't have to change the engine. time between overhaul first. the engine could have still be useful.

if you talking brakes not clutch. you can pump the brakes all day long and they don't build pressure and you not losing fluids the master is out. now if you pump them up and they are rock hard your hydrabooster is out.now if your mechanically incline you can order a master cylinder rebuild kit for like 20-30 bucks which is basically orings from local parts store and only tools you need are snapring pliers. or you can change the master ,bench bleed it first then bleed out the rr,lr,rf,lf in that order.hope i help.all under 100 bucks

re: 1996 Mercury Sable, ohv V6 . . . . A mechanic diagnosed the cause of engine failure to a bent piston rod as a result of someone having poured water directly into the engine -- is that possible? Further, research showed evidence that water had been leaking past the head gasket directly into the affected cylinder. Additionally, the heads had to be resurfaced.

if its not starting then its something else than a water pump verify that its your water pump first before you take anything off because it will give you a headache if its something else.

Check engine is on

Yes. You can still drive the car without worrying. Your fuel mileage may decrease, and you may begin to smell a unburned fuel (sulphur) smell. Eventually, you will need to have the oxygen sensor replaced or you may cause damage to your catalytic converter.
