Re: Gas Gauge not working properly
First...how do you get 25 mpg...I get 21 or so!!!! Additives will never work on this. The price for the pump is $150-175 for an aftermarket unit.
I just did the tank job for the sender. Get an aftermarket pump/sender. DO NOT ORDER from RockAuto for this part...their listing is wrong. They send the gasket...which comes with the replacement. Replacing the unit is relatively easy:
- Have less than 5 gals of gas in the tank.
- Get the driver's side of the car in the air and support it.
- Remove plugs to the left of the tank on the bottom of the vehicle
- Start car and allow gas pressure to subside...car will stall
- Remove the fill pipe from the left rear of the tank..there is a valve on the fill pipe which will contain all but a few drops of gas
- support the tank and remove the bolts that hold the tank straps and lower the tank.
- lower the tank and remove the vent hose at the rear of the tank so you can swing it out
- after swinging it out, prepare to remove the unit from the top of the tank retaining the connector snap ons for the new unit. Clean the area around the pump to remove the possibility of contamination. Tap the ring sharply counterclockwise to remove it from the tank.
- Remove old and install new, pressing the unit into the tank...be sure to use that new gaaket they gave you. Tap on ring, swing tank back, reconnect hoses, raise and bolt up. Plug in.
- Start the car after turning key and waiting for 15 seconds to start so pressure can build.
I did it in 3 hours. If you have help for liffting and all that, probably 2..2 1/2
I have same problem, erratic fuel gauge after 90K miles or so. I been doing alot of internet reading, using Tecron additive to try to clear. On my third bottle at 8 bucks each on non- texaco or chevron fuel. I fuel up w/Texaco and Chevron which already has Tecron in it when I can find them. All of this much cheaper than dropping tank (prematurely?) and changing sending unit. Might give the "GM fuel system treatment plus" (google this for much info) a whirl but hesitiating on the 25 dollar price. Many comments on internet regarding this problem. Seems to be in all GM vehicles from vans to corvettes. Dropping tank looks pretty complex for DIY (me), would LOVE to know if there is acess panel. I saw something about access in trunk of MonteCarlo, will look for one in my silhouette- that would greatly simplify things. Likely not though with spare tire location. In meantime use odomoter and MPG read out to avoid running out of gas. this method works real well but guage is nuisance esp when ding ding ding low fuel domes on unexpectedly. I get 25MPG easily in my silhouette, closer to 30 on hwy, but I drive with gas efficiency in mind and even "hypermileage" to some degree (safely) when I can (distant drafting on hwy, coasting locally, neutral at stop lights etc.).
I have the same issue except when sit at an idle even right after filling up the low fuel light comes on and stays on sometimes until I restart the van. I have tried three treatments of STP to no avail. Normal is the gas gage reads full all the time. If I see if move, it falls all the way to empty.
need to replace the fuel pump but don't know where is locate
