Re: check engine is on
Yes. You can still drive the car without worrying. Your fuel mileage may decrease, and you may begin to smell a unburned fuel (sulphur) smell. Eventually, you will need to have the oxygen sensor replaced or you may cause damage to your catalytic converter.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

in line engines will have 2 --one before the cat converter (HO2S) and one after (O2S)
if it is v engine there will be 1 of each in the same positions for each bank
HO2S sensor have 4 wires and O2 sensors have 2 wires and cannot be confused if the ECM is to control the mixture properly
Have your mechanic check your exhaust out put. There are three things to check: egr valve, oxygen senser(s), if these are good, you have a stopped up catalytic converter(s). Remember your engine must breathe too.
Take your car to a mechanic, or to your local auto parts superstore and have a scan done to find the fault codes that are making the light come on. AutoZone, Advance auto parts, Pep Boys, and the like. Then you'll know for sure if it's an oxygen sensor, or something else. Hope this helps
Did you buy a Ford MAF sensor? There are some brands that are not reliable or accurate. Buy a Ford MAF sensor, if your mechanic has decided that the MAF is faulty. You may have a leaking fuel injector, bad coolant temp sensor, bad oxygen sensor, dirty air filter, clogged exhaust system.
Check the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter might be bad; but I would check the oxygen sensor first. Also clean the cold air intake sensor, if there is something cover it then you'll see the checkengine flickers on but your engine is running fine.
o2 sensor is usually located on the manifold of most 4 cylinder engines they are normally a one wire connection. you will need the following:
New oxygen sensor....these can be really expensive.
a open end wrench that fits the O2 sensor, or an O2 sensor socket and a ratchet to loosen and tighten the O2 sensor
Start by driving the car to get the car warm o2 sensors can be very hard to get out if they are cold.
if you think you might burn yourself on something hot put thick gloves on, you will have to disconnect the on wire on the o2 sensor, unfortunately you cant wear gloves while doing this, so be extremely careful as the exhaust will be very hot.
After wire disconnected loosen o2 sensor by going counter clock wise using either a o2 sensor socket or a appropriate wrench
while wearing gloves, after the sensor is loose enough unscrew by hand, remember it is still very hot.
you can let engine cool down now if you want.
put new o2 sensor in tightening it firmly and replug the electrical connector back up.
if your check engine light does not go out take to autozone and have them reset your computer, or you can disconnect your battery cables for 20+ minutes and this resets the computer also.
