I have a 1990 camaro 3.1 L. automatic. Car will idle fine, drive fine. Then all of a sudden it will start surging and missfiring and will not idle. Idle will go up and down. Then problem will clear itself.

There are two solutions or situations to this. one your timing is off and you will need to use a timing device or something like that. second you just need to let the motor war up. you may have to keep reving to me motor till you think the car is warm up. it may take about 10 - 15 minutes but dont rev the motor too much.

SOURCE: rough idle

The cam or crank sensor is going out when driving at high speeds. I would have those parts check, and have the fuel pressure check , fuel filter change to be on the safe side.

Good luck

SOURCE: I have a Irco 350 TPI engine that I want to swap into a

you can run this motor carburated if you want by purchasing an after market conversion intake and carburator setup. if you want to leave it fuel injected you will need to swap wiring harnes and everything, computers and sensors you will have to run manual guages for the temp sensors and oil pressure guage and alternator due to your speedo being unable to accept them.

When idleing once in a while it starts running rough and shaking truck, 1998 k1500 350. no engine light. when i gige it gas it smooths right out. engine seems like its a little louder than normal.

Here is the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.

To correct this problem Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, NEVER USE CARB CLEANING SPRAY, IT DESTROYS THE ANTI-STICK TEFLON COATING, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.

Danny, I helped my friend who is a good mechanic change the #1 and #3 injectors on my '91 Z28(350 T.P.I.). Before we changed them I was not having a problem with the Idle but after...it's chugging,...

THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE NEED ADJUSTING AND THE IDLE SPEED HAS TO BE READJUSTED. THIS JOB IS A HEAD ACHE.I WOULD LET DEALERSHIP DO IT.THEY CAN RESET AND REPROGRAM IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE.IF TRY FIXING YOUR SELF YOU WILL HAVE HIGH IDLING PROBLEMS AND VECHICLE STALLING OUT ON YOU.

1993 chevy truck with a 350, it wont idle right, replaced ecm, tpi, idle control?

While I am not familiar with your trucks fuel system I'd check the fuel pressure and injectors. Often times fuel isses are less prevelent at higher RPMs then they are at idle.

Hope that might help,
Tom
