If your going to attempt this yourself then you need a few things.

Go to your local car parts shop. You will need a Toyota Corrola Manual in order to find the connector on the low pressure side of your AC compressor.

You will need to find this connector first to determine if the connector is a screw fit or a quick release push fit. You also need to work out what refrigerant to add to your car - R22 or R134a. R134a is more environmentally safe ( the numbers are from memory so may be slightly different but buy the manual and check that first for the type of refrigerant used in your model).

You also need to look for a Recharge can with Stop leak and Leak detector in it - they will have it at the auto shop should be under $20 (you may wish to buy two cans just in case as often one isn't enough) - and once you know the type of fitting you need to use you need to by the recharge connector that will fit on the low pressure side and attach to the top of the recharge can.

Typically the leak detector can be a red dye that can be seen by the eye or a yellow dye that glows under untraviolet light - so if you don't have an ultra violet light source its going to be difficult to see the leak with the yellow stuff . The other problem you may have is if the leak is really bad the system may need to be fixed (stop the leak) and the evacualted for the AC unit to really become effective.

Anyway the practice is to find the recharge connection on the low pressure line. Take the cap off.
Connect the recharge hose you bought to the recharge can. This end of the hose has a tap and spike arrangement that is going to puncture the top of the can but you make sure the tap is fully wound out (away from the can) when you fit it initially. Later in the process you are going to wind the pin in to puncture the can once its all set up. So with the can connnected to that end of the hose you have to fit the other end of the hose to the low pressure side of the AC line on the Corrola. Do that as quickly as possible - if its a push fit with locking ring the action of you pushing the connector on does two things opens the AC system and seals the tube connector onto the Low pressure side. Its inportant to do this as fast as possible to prevent any refidgerant that may be in the system from leaking out and to prevent contaminants getting into the system.

Start the car.
Put the AC on full
Go back to the engine and wind the spike into the can fully to puncture the can it and then wind the spike back out again to allow the refrigerant to enter the AC system.

The can should get pretty cold even to the point of icing a little.
Go back in the car and with the AC system on full and the blower turned on to say the 2nd fan position check for cooler air starting to come through the vents in the car.

You should be able to go back round to the engine after say 5 mins and check that the recharge can is now empty.
Screw the spike back into the can - turn the AC and the engine off and disconnect the low pressure side connector on the hose. If its a push fit it has a brash ring you have to pull up to release the tube and then pull the tube off the system.

You can repeat the process with the 2nd can if needed now.
Screw the protective cap back on once you have completed all recharging.

Now two things to check - where are any signs of red dye coming out of the AC system and 2nd does the AC actually work.

If the AC still doesn't work it may just be that you have such a drastic leak that the system needs to be fixed - e.i. a condenser unit replaced or something and now you are into $100s to fix it.

Caution! Air conditioner servicing requires special equipment and training to carry out.
Freon or (R-11, R-12, R-22, R-134).etc is a gas which remains as a liquid when under pressure. Therefore it will cool as it expands to a lower pressure.
You should never undo an A/C line as it will freeze hands etc.
To check for leaks while testing, a technician will add a special dye to system and then look for leaks with a UV Lamp.

You need an electronic leak detector, and these are prety expensive, also once you find the leak it may take special tools and equipment to make the repairs and recharge your system. This is no small, minor repair, I recommend that you find a reliable technician to do this for you.

Hissing sound right after i turn the ignition on like air escaping from somewhere. it started right after I added freon to my ac. What could this be?


It's possible that there is a leak somewhere in the AC system and when you turn the car on the high pressure in the lines pushes some of the freon out. Normally you don't need to add freon so my guess is you have a small leak somewhere.

If you've never worked on an air conditioning system before, I would recommend you take it to a shop and get it checked out.
If the system is low on freon, you have a leak that would need to be fixed to keep any freon you add from leaking back out. And it could have an electrical problem instead of being low on freon.
Freon gas is minus 35 degrees when it comes out of the can.

Hi there:
What can happen is the vehicles Freon will leak out and reduce the total pressure in the system. Then the low-pressure cut out switch will disengage the compressor when the low side is detected below 25 psi.

This safety feature is to protect the compressor itself. I have seen mechanics bypass the low cut out switch for testing. This should never be done and is not recommended.

The visual presence of oil around a fitting or pressurized line is a strong indication of a refrigerant leak. So my first step in air-conditioning leak diagnosis is to perform a very careful visual inspection of the entire system.

Although this is always my first step for diagnosing Freon leaks it is not always effective in finding the exact problem. In fact, this visual inspection will only uncover large to extremely large leaks. A more common air-conditioning problem would be small leaks that allow Freon to escape over long periods of time. So to follow will be some methods to detect these small leaks.
- The Robinair leak detector is a hand held battery operated electronic leak sniffer. The test probe on the end of the leak detector is moved about 1 inch per second in the areas of suspected leaks. The Robin air leak detector has an alarm that will go off when it detects the presence of a Freon leak. Note on some other models they may have flashing lights or a buzzer. Also some leak detectors are specialized to detect only certain freons (example: 134a) but they all are designed to alert you when they sniff the refrigerant.
- To find refrigerant leaks using the fluorescent tracer system, you first have to install the fluorescent dye into the cars air-conditioning system. Always follow the instructions and do not install too much dye! Too much can reduce the cooling efficiency of the system. Different refrigerant dye leak detectors will accomplish this in different ways. The system we use at work has a device that looks like a caulking gun, and a hose that connects to the low side fitting. Then you actually push the dye into the low side with the engine running and the compressor engaged. Next you run the air-conditioning system for several minutes to distribute the dye evenly. Then you put on your yellow glasses and examine the system with a fluorescent light.
The fluorescent dye shows up easily wearing the yellow glasses.

A very popular selling item is Refrigerant with leak sealer. This item will only seal very small leaks. I have used the stuff pictured to the right "super seal pro" and it does work in some situations.

The Freon leak sealer works best when you have low side system leaks. And if you happen to have a small leak from an O-ring on the low side this stuff works well. If you have a leak on the high-pressure side chances are this sealer will not work for you.

I turned on my air conditioning today for the first time since last fall... it was not blowing cold air. It was working fine the last time i used it 3 months ago. Could it be a fuse problem?.. or maybe...


While the engine is running as you turn on the A/C , the compressor will latch on now as you will find the engine faulting in RPM as it comes on. Now if this is so the compressor, the solenoid clutch is good and the fault can be only loss of gas in the system. If not the compressor pumping pressure needs a check. Also if gas has leaked the system needs a test for leaks.

    I was just recently in a car accident. My raditor broke and had to be replaced. Because i didnt want to pay a mechanic to do it i did the job myself. It worked out well but after dissembling it the coolant...


    first you need to find out why the freon leaked out then repair that, then you will need a vac pump to vacuum the system for about 45 mins then if you lost oil add a couple of oz,when you lost the freon if there was a cloud of oil and gas then add 2oz before the vac down while system is open put into line or dryer or condensor, after the vac, then recharge to spec, there a label at the radiator support or on the hood that tells you how much freon the system holds,here you go it holds 1.48lbs of 134a freon.

    My air condition is not working


    first check your fuses and any relays sometimes you have multible relays that are the same in a fuse box that you can switch around but i would bet you have a leak either in your compressor or in your line if the clutch is not kicking on and off or running all the time when you turn it on thats because your freon has leaked out the system is sealed freon does not go bad if there is no pressure in the system it will just blow warm air your question is vague so if your blower is not blowing bad blower motor or a fuse if warm not getting cold your system has a leak if you have not broke the system you can try stop leak 2 cans to seal a leaky compressor compressor could be bad if it wont spin noisy clutch could be bad need new compressor but if a leak after stop leak add the right amount or r-134a 2 to 3 cans if the compressor kicks on on the first can of stop leak or freon your system did leak down and you hope the stop leak fixes it but first check all your lines are tight and that the freon is not leaking from the high or low pressure ports the valve can leak sometimes make sure your caps are on take some spit after you add freon back into your system see if your spit blows a bubble if it does replace or tighten the valve. a few things to check start with power fuses then add a can of freon if you have power now clutch engagement if you add and kicks on there is the reason a leaky system it will all leak back out in a day or several days... thats why you can add the stop leak things you can try or take it to the shop and pay someone some $$$$$

    Air conditioning blowing out warm air was blowing out cold air gradually over a week it became warm


    The Air-conditioning needs to be re-gassed. Take the car to an Auto Mechanic to get the Air-Conditioning re-gassed. They might also need to check it for leaks to make sure the gas stays in.

    Air Conditioning blowing cool air not cold


    Freon does not loose it's ability to cool. There is either insufficient Freon for the size of the system indicating a leak, or the pump is wearing to the point where it can no longer provide sufficient compression of the gas. In either case, a trained tech is required and should be able to provide an immediate diagnosis.
