I had both probs occur and learned they were not related. The Park interlock solenoid weakened to point where most of the time the pin did not retract. (The pin is what you retract manually when you press something in the keyhole under the steering column.) It is very expensive to replace. So I removed the bottom cover of steering column, pulled the pin out, wrapped it with solder wire to keep it retracted, and everything is fine. OK my car now shifts out of Park when not running but don't tell anybody. The intermittent brake lights is caused by the cheesy plastic brake light switch under the dash. Dealer wanted $250 to replace it. AutoZone sells a very robust steel Ford replacement switch for $16.00 and it took me half hour to install it (note I do not have adjustable pedals.)

You have a problem in the shift interlock circuit.Check your fuses under the dash. If the fuse is open you have a short. Since the brake lights are not working properly, you need to get it fixed right away or take it into a Ford dealer or a garage with an ASE certified master technician that understands the circuit. Why won't my 2002 Volvo s80 shift out of park?

All vehicles have a safety feature that won't allow a vehicle to be shifted into gear without the drivers foot being on the brake pedal . Shifter interlock system . There is a electrically controlled solenoid that locks the shifter ,when you step on the brake pedal an electrical signal un locks the shifter ,allowing the gear selector to move.

What should we do?

Hi there,
There is a (silly) safety lock on the ignition to stop it starting in gear, or the key being removed if not in park, and a sensible safety lock on the gear shift to stop kids letting it roll down a hill. Try putting your foot firmly on the brake, press the park release button beside the gear shift, while pulling the shifter out of park and back into park.
Getting the key out: Sometimes the steering wheel is placing pressure on the steering lock and key release mechanism, so try turning the steering wheel in any direction it can go while trying to release the key. It should come only out when you are in park.

Gear shift stuck in park

Does the brake lights work? If not check the fuses, and maybe brake light switch at the brake pedal. It can shift if you turn the key on(only enough to un-lock the steering wheel) then shift it to neutral, then start the vehicle, just remember if you shift it back to park it will be stuck again..Dont try driving it if the brake lights do not work, very dangerous for you and other drivers.

Can't get out of park, steering wheel lock

The park lock out is powered by the brake light circuit, so 1st thing to do is check and see if the brake lights work, if not you have found the problem. Repair the brake lights as needed. You can over ride the lock out by turning the key in the the switch just short of the spring loaded position that starts the car while wiggling the shifter.

Having trouble shifting from park to any gear, when I wait about 15 secs it may shift easily and other times I turn the wheel and it will shift

Do not shift into park and move the steering wheel to lock it. It will lock itself if the vehicle is moved or someone tries to steel it. Reason is that the lock pin hsas many holes to drop into and if you lock it when you have turning pressure on in it. You will lock it with pressure on the lock pin.
Second, always set your parking brake before, not after putting it in park. Never put your front tires against a curb and put it in park without letting the vehile roll away from the curb.. An don't hang you car on a slope by putting it in park. Parking brake always befor parking gear and hands off steering wheel when placing in park. Try it, you'll like it.. forcing your shifter to come out of park can cause damage to the shifting componants. Let me know how it works for you. - Ned_
