Question about 2006 Buick LeSabre

Battery won't hold a charge, and when being jumped starter is not engaging, not even a click , but evry thing else is powering up

    replaced starter it worked then started to click then nothing charged battery then tried to boost still nothing

Sounds like a bad cell or broken plate in the battery, make sure to check for loose cables and corrosion before replacing battery

What cause the car want start even if u jump it it just cleick


Start with the basics, here. Check that battery cables are not loose and are CLEAN, on the battery AND the starter. Beyond that, check the battery charge with a volt meter. Fully charged should be 12.5 volts or higher, you will lose starter spin at 10 volts. If the battery is low, hook it up to a charger and charge it up completely. If you don\'t have a voltmeter, go to the store and buy one. If you\'re going to try and fix things like this, you have to have one. If you can\'t do that, remove the battery and take it to someplace like AutoZone. They will charge and test the battery for free. If you can\'t take the battery out, or don\'t have a friend that can, have the car towed to your mechanic.



Here\'s the thing- I can\'t tell you exactly why, but some cars you just can\'t jump start. Happens more on side mount post type batteries. Because you can\'t jump your car doesn\'t mean it won\'t start with a fully charged battery. Now there are other things that could be wrong with you car, that it won\'t crank over and start for you.....but we begin the diagnosis with the battery.

Could be a failing starter or problems with the cables.
A dead cell in the battery will do it too.

Won't start, even w/a jump it just clicks


since this type of engine have a safety low voltage sensor the battery have to have a minimum voltage power to start. if the battery doest not receive the adequate charge they will not start even with the jump cables connected to other car. looks like the battery have to be re-please, refer to a manual for the adequate battery for this windstar since the connections change in some years. also check the alternator and alternator belt for proper tension and charging capabilities.

My truck won't start. It won't turn over... only clicking noise.. even with a jump. the headlights work but very dimly.. orange lights next to headlights flash on and off dimly consistently as well...


When a battery is very low, even a jump won't work because the battery takes too much out of the jump. Take the battery out and have it charged up.
If it won't take a charge, get a new one.
But also make sure the battery terminals and cable ends are shiny and greased.

If you really want to be sure, put a voltmeter on it.
A good battery should be 12.5.
When you crank it should go down to about 10.
If it goes below 9, either the battery is too low, or the starter is draining too much.
If it never goes below 11, it is not draining enough, and the solenoid is probably bad.
If when you stop cranking, it comes back up to over 11, then the battery is good, so the starter is probably bad.

If the switch (neutral safety switch) is broken, it will not crank regardless whether you jump the battery or a new battery is installed. I don't have specific manual for your year that's why my advice is as in general. With a remote starter tool, bypassing the solenoid wire with remote starter which is connected to the positive terminal of the battery of it's other end. Once positive current flows from the battery, through the remote switch, flowing towards the solenoid, the starter should engage indicating a bad wiring harness connection from ignition switch. If it doesn't crank at all you may have a bad starter assembly and needs replacing. If your starter is clicking using it's own battery power, your battery is low of charge or your charging system is malfunctioning.

Truck just clicks down at starter...have had no sign of starter slipping and lights still on so dont believ its battery


Hi there,

That clicking noise is your starter solenoid. There can be different causes, the most common is the battery. I will explain what is happening.

Your starter needs a lot of power to turn your engine. That much power would melt your ignition switch in no time if it passed directly through it. So what happens instead is your ignition switch actuates another electric switch called a solenoid. The solenoid is a really HEAVY DUTY switch.

Inside it are two copper contacts that look like the head of a bolt only rounded. The battery is attached to one, the starter to the other. Hovering above them on a spring is a copper clad disk attached to an iron core. The iron core is inside an electro-magnet.

When you turn your key (in a perfect world), an electromagnet is activated that yanks the disk towards the contacts (Making a single decisive healthy CLICK). When they connect, the circuit is closed and the starter turns over. OK.

When things go wrong:

Low Battery:
  • The solenoid requires power to actuate.
  • The starter takes a lot more power to turn the engine.
  • When the battery is low, there isn't enough power to do both.
  • You turn the key, solenoid engages (CLICK)
  • Power goes to the starter
  • The starter tries to turn the engine
  • The draw from the starter drops the available power below the minimum needed to keep the solenoid engaged.
  • The solenoid disengages
  • The starter is no longer drawing power
  • The additional power allows the solenoid to re-engage (Click)
  • Repeat the process for as long as you have the key turned. (CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK)
That's where those clicks are coming from and why.

The remedy:
Short term - Jump start
Long term - Charge or replace battery.

There can also be a problem with the solenoid. Specifically, with that copper clad disk I mentioned earlier.

When that many amps are drawn from a battery there is heat and sparking which erode the copper plating. There comes a point where ther disk can no longer 'Complete the circuit'. It then needs replacement.

How to tell the difference?

If it's the battery, a jump start will work.

If it's the solenoid, a jump start will have no effect.

I wanted to explain what was happening rather than just saying 'dead battery, replace it'. That way you can judge for yourself whats going on.

Hi Meadors,

The clicking sound you heard most likely the starter solenoid engaging the starter. Only in this case it's failing to engage the starter. This is a classic symptom of a low battery. Here's why.

In a perfect world, when you turn the key to start:
  1. the solenoid is fed 12VDC which engages an electromagnetic coil inside it.
  2. A spring loaded steel piston inside this coil reacts to the magnetic field. It is pulled against the spring. By itself this sounds like a loud decisive CLICK.
  3. The movement of the piston simultaneously pushes the starter gear into the flywheel and sends power to the starter via heavy duty contacts. The starter draws a lot of power.
  4. The starter spins, turns the engine, the engine starts, life is good.
  5. When the key is released, the solenoid disengages, the spring pushes the piston back, the starter gear disengages from the flywheel.
In our world, when you turn the key to start:
  1. The solenoid which draws it's share of power engages as before. Click.
  2. As the starter tries to spin, the power available is insufficient. It draws all remaining power, there isn't enough left to keep the solenoid active and it turns off.
  3. Since the starter isn't drawing power anymore, the solenoid re-engages and the cycle starts over. Click.
  4. The cycle repeats. Click. A series of rapid clicks. Same page?
While a dead battery is the prime suspect, there can be other causes. Things to do:

  • Check belts, specifically on the alternator.
  • Terminal connections clean and tight.
  • In the 'Let's not over look the obvious' department: Battery voltage?
  • Get a jump. Try a jump start.
  • If a jump gets you going, it is either the battery not holding a charge or the alternator not providing one.
Even new batteries can be bad off the shelf. Especially if they have been on that shelf for a while. They may show the voltage but not the amps. This is called a 'Surface Charge'.

If you don't have a voltmeter, what you need to do now is visit an auto parts store (not a shop). Most (in the hope of making a sale) will provide free testing of batteries and charging systems.

What you need is called a "Load Test" on the battery. It simulates the load of an engine being started. This will confirm the battery is good or bad.

Then with the car running, they need to check the voltage to the battery (they will know this). If it's not above +13VDC, the alternator is bad or not connected correctly.

And if it doesn't start, what better place to be?
