SOURCE: Process to get to tail

I just did this,
You will find one phillips screw on the inside of the door frame, holding a small panel (under the tail light) emove this screw and panel, thjis will expose two screws holding the tail light assembly, remove these screws and the taillight assy will come loose , now you can remove the lamp.

SOURCE: Replace Tail light assembly

Loosen ther interior plastic to gain access to the 2 hidden nuts. We use an articulated ratchet to get to the bolts, however. Not hard to do.

SOURCE: How do you replace rear tail light assembly?

Open the trunk and along the bottom of the tail light, there should be a Philips screw securing a cover piece. (your car may or may not have this piece)
With the cover off, there will be another 2 screws securing the bottom of the tail light assembly. Remove the screws and pull the bottom out and the top is held in by two retainers that should just slide right out

Process to get to tail light bulb for replacement on 99 rav4. Do you have to remove the paneling in the rear compartment?

Well, this is rather embarassing but I simple decided to look through the owners manual thinking that they usually don't contain that sort of thing and there I found. Pictures and a description of the process. Very simple...remove a phillips screw to remove a small plate covering the 2 screws that hold the tail light assembly in place. Remove the 2 screws and pull our the assembly and replace the bulb. Duh....I thought with Toyota engineering, they wouldn't make replacing a bulb a major project. Thanks for checking back....Allen
