Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Car moves backwards in "Park"

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry with 93K miles.
When I pull into the garage and put the car in park, it starts to move backwards a little in an abrubt manner. Like chug chug chug. It doesn't go far but it doesn't feel good. This has also happened in parking lots that are level.

I'm almost afraid to ask.......

Can be that the cable for your shifter lever needs to be adjusted in the engine bay on the transmission itself. it may be that when you shift it into park the lever doesn't reach far into the park position hence would still be in reverse and then when it bucks thats when the time it slips into park.

Toyota camry drove home and parked and now won't move? NO ****** ISSUES BEFORE THIS!

It will not move in Reverse either? It could be

- the shift cable has broken
- the parking lock pawl has broken
- park/neutral position switch faulty
- transmission manual valve faulty

I think one of the first 3. There isn't much you can do except have it towed to a transmission shop.

I have a 1998 toyota camry that will not mover out of park. Ive tried putting the brake on and turning the wheel but the shifter will not move. How do I get the shifter to move?

There is a switch behind the brake pedal that allows the shifter to release out of park. Most likely that switch is bad. If the vehicle has a console shifter, look at the top of the shifter plate where you see the "DNR123" and there should be a small square plug that you can remove. Once you remove the small cover there is a button under the cover that you can depress and then you can shift the car out of "park" until your able to get it fixed. "Its called a neutral safety switch"

The D stands for drive.. This will make your car go forward :) if your car is revving too high in park you can change the idle speed with a screw on either the fuel injection system or the carburettor depending on what the v6 camry uses

This is a tranmission linkage problem. The car may be in park but the linkage arm well sometimes slip of or sometimes just run crooked as you switch through the gears. My car has also done the same thing until I recapped the arm with a new lock washer

I need to know why my car keeps moving when i put

When you have the vehicle in Neutral it should roll. If it rolls in Park you have a transmission problem. If your talking about a few inches when it is on a hill it is just play in the gears and you should use the Emergency brake when parking in that area to reduce strain on the Transmission.

Car must be on and brake pedal depressed to shift. If you have no brake lights then the car doesn't know the pedal is depressed and will not shift out of park. This car has an interlock overide on the shifter console, push it and it will come out of Park. You will need a brake light switch tho.

Car won't move while in gear or stay still in park

You have either broken an axle or the differential is gone in the trans axle. If it is just an axle maybe 1 or 2 hundred dollars. If it is the trans axle you are looking at possibly $1000 or more. Sounds more like it is the trans axle though. Mike
