Just got my 97 Jeep Cherokee Grand today and was going to drive it tonight and have learned the headlights did not work. My high beam work fine but I have to hold the switch to keep them on. But no headlights. All else working fine. I checked the 2 main fues for the auto lights and headlight and they are fine. I also check the bulbs themself and they are fine.

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country. The headlights did not come on when I pulled out the switch. Replace the switch with an OEM switch bought at a Jeep dealer. It didn't look exactly like the original but the parts guy said it will fit the Jeeps from years 94-2001. It did not work. Only the headlights would come on. No parking or tail lights. I ohmed out the switch and only one set of contacts close. I jumpered the connector on those 2 spots and the headlights come on. I found the terminal on the connector that lights the tail and parking lights and jumped that to the 12 volt slot on the connector. The tail and parking lights lit. I know all the lights work without the switch but with the switch they don't. I returned the switch to the dealer and got a new one. Same exact thing happened. Headlights only. What do I do. I can't get a switch that will work and it is obvious that the dealer can get me the original switch. I don't know what I should do. Need help!!

1993 jeep cherokee sport. Headlights go out after driving short distance, side lights stay on. Always does this at about the same driving distance. Replaced in-dash switch (twice !) still have same problem. No obvious fault with lights or wiring after first installing new switch. Conclude that the switch is not the problem...

Sounds more like the head light switch is at fault, check it, I think the issue is there.

Had the same problem as hucr9 and replaced headlight switch, same problem. started probing around an found a bad contact on a connector. cleaned it and it works fine now. check all your lights for a short! 25amp circuit breaker in switch will make them go on an off. also just because it is a "new" switch does not mean that it is good. bought 2 from auto parts and both did not work the dash lights, duh, contact was not touching the rheostat, bent it and now works fine.

No dash lights or tail lights

Well it could always be a wiring problem, but you were right in thinking it was the headlight switch. Each circuit is different and only joins up in the headlight switch. Each circuit has a fuse sending power to the switch. So I would want to know if you have power in and out of the headlight switch on each circuit.

My brake lights work but my tail lights and reverse lights don't work. Also my dash lights quit when I changed the switch for my headlights.

Check your fuses. I had the same problem with a 90 Honda civic. Dash lights went out, tail lights also went out. Replaced 1 fuse and all came back on.

Dash and tail lights stopped working on my daughters 1991 toyota celica gt. the fuse has been checked and replaced. it was ok. the headlights were recently changed. is it true the dash and tail lights run...

If the tail lights and the dash lights stopped working and the tail light and the panel lighting fuses are both o.k. and you can find no other blown fuses then the problem is most likely the headlight switch.

What started this mess? tailights, fog lights, brake lights....

The relay has nothing to do with the tail lights, but replacing the switch sounds like a good idea. There's a nut holding it in place, see to get an idea of the construction. And the price. This is not worth fiddling about unreliable workarounds...
In addition, if fuses 15 and/or 16 burn frequently there might be a problem with the tail light cabling.

Good luck

1994 grand Am Dash & Rear Lights

Check all the fuses, if they're ok then check the switch or wiring, it might be that the wire running from the switch to the park / dash lights is fried. Does the front park lights work? (turn switch to first click, not second one. This is park lights, second click is full on headlights) Your park and dash lights are probably all connected to a single wire from the switch via the fuse box.

Headlights went out & dash lights went on brighter

That can be a whole lot of things causing this but first if you have an aftermarket remote starter unhook it first to see if the problem resolves it's self, also there are fuses for the headlights check these, another thing to check is have the alternator check as one that puts out to much voltage will blow fuses and make dash lights really bright, autozone can check these for free anything over 14 volts the alternator regulater has went out .

the connection to the light adjustment knob thats imbeded in your dash. the one that adjusts the intensity of your dash lights and such probably came loose or detached.

Headlights not working

It sounds to me like you might have a loose headlight connector, or something is causing the conduit inside the headlight to shatter, if you take the car to work every day do you go over a big bump at all? also what brand are you using and what does Hyundai recommend using, the wrong headlight bulb can also make this happen - just because it fits doesn't mean its right.
