Question about 2004 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Transmission THIS CAR WAS IN A ACCIDENT WENT TO THE SHOP FOR REPAIRS. AFTER CAR WAS PICKED UP EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE THE CAR WOULD SHIFT REAL HARD WHEN SHIFTING, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. TOOK IT BACK TO DEALER HE SAID THAT THESE CARS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ONE ARE TWO WIRES THAT RUN TO THE TRANSMISSION GET CORRODED AND MAKE BAD CONNECTION WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO SHIFT ROUGH. THEY SAY THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO SPLICE A NEW WIRE IN BECAUSE THE COROSION CAN BE ANYWHERE IN THE WIREING HARNESS WHICH WOULD BE WAY TO HARD AND EXSPENSIVE TO REPLACE. HAS ANYONE HEARD OF SUCH A PROBLEM? HE SAID IT WAS COMMON IN THIS CAR.

Try some Lucas in the transmission fluid. It can help minor problems sometimes, otherwise time to either head to the junkyard for another transmission or the shop to get it rebuilt.

2003Dodge caravans sporthaving problems with hard down shift already change fluid and filter still have problems once in awhile

Automatic trans are about the most neglected thing on a car. If they are working fine no one seems to pay them any attention till it is too late. Being one of the most expensive repairs on a car this is just wrong to neglect it. Key to long life is service before there is a problem. Servicing after a problem can even be worse on one, but it's hard to know which would help, sometimes service can bring it back if there was just a restriction in a fluid passage or stopped up filter.

Transmission

You've done about all you can do. Just hope the problem doesn't return. Often, a fluid and filter change will resolve shifting problems. But if it doesn't or if it returns, better get to a transmission shop for diagnosis and an estimate of repairs. Ouch! if you need a transmission rebuild or replacement-you would have to consider if repairs are worthy on a high mileage, '92 model car. My inclination would be to look for a used, low-mileage replacement transmission if one had to replace it. But if it's fixed now, get all the happy motoring you can from it while it works.

In 2001 the "Check Engine" light might give information about what's going on with the transmission. You may want to have it checked by a shop before the transmission decides to die. It might be a simple fix.

Honestly, while there is a chance that there is a bigger problem, it sounds more like its time for a transmission service. Hard thunking shifts when starting or stopping with no other apparent symptoms on older vehicles can usually be corrected by a transmission flush. if you pull out your tranny dipstick and the fluid is any darker than bright red and/or smells burnt (smell should make you cringe a bit) then take it to a shop and get it flushed out. I recommend a service center that uses a BG power flush unit. These services seem expensive on the surface but only have to be done about once every 3 years and can prevent more costly and involved repairs down the road.

At the suggestion of a friend, I let the car warm up for up to 10 minutes before I drive and I do not have the problem.

1994 Ford Crown Vic brake shifter interlock Safety switch

You should be able to remove the wiring from the switch and jump it to allow the transmission to be shifted. Though this tow bill should belong to the brake shop and be thier responcibility not yours.
I would demand they get the vehicle picked up and repairs be made.
Good Luck
