Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

Highbeam Headlights not working

My 1996 chevrolet cavalier's highbeam headlights will not work. The lowbeam lights work fine but when i use the dimmer switch to change from low to high the highbeams don't work. I tried replacing the dimmer switch but that didn't work, and i also tried replacing the bulbs and that didn't work either.

Hello I have the same problem. I have a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 4 door. The bright light indicator stays on all the time and when the headlights are turned on they only work with the dim lights, but the brights indicator stays on. Also the daytime running lamps are not working and sometimes the indicator for the daytime running lamps flashes. I suspect a bad ground or bad connector.

The lowbeam keeps going out. When you loosen the bumper to replace bulb it comes back on. Has repeated this process 5 times.

Try replacing the fuse because low beam and high beam are two different systems

No headlights only on highbeam

Dimmer switch most likely out of adjustment or faulty, but could be your headlight switch.

Both low beam headlights are out bulbs have been recently replaced several times and driver side connection. They went out breifly a few months ago as we were driving and came back on in a few minutes

sounds like the switch assembly on the actually column ( what you use to turn the headlights on and off) may have went bad! and or the relay for the headlights. my money would be on the dimmer switch though considering the highbeam and lowbeam are 2 different circuits. thats if both the bulbs have been checked and found good as you say. good luck

1998 Volvo lowbeams will not come on. Tried replacing the headlight fuse, light control relay, and the turn signal/highbeam arm....still nothing. Am I missing something somewhere? The parking lights and...

If your high beams come on only when you hold the lever, and you have no headlights otherwise, i would suggest it has to be the dimmer switch that is faulty. First, though, use a test light to see if you have power to the low beams. Just pull the bulb out, and test in the socket. If you have power there, the problem is just the bulbs. No... they didn't both burn out at once, but you don't notice until they are both gone. You meet cars all the time with one headlight. When the second one goes, they over think the problem.
The fact that your dimmer switch has to be held to get any headlights would lead me to believe it's the dimmer switch that is faulty.

My left headlight highbeam light works and the lowbeam don't why

the filament on the low beam burnt out. but the high beam didn't. You have a filament for each. 1 for high beam and 1 for low beam in the same light bulb. You need a new head light.

Lowbeams don't work so I have to ride with highbeam

But the assumption is that both went out at the same time. I would say it is likely that one low beam went out, wasn't noticed, then the other low beam went out, which couldn't be missed.

I would say replace headlights/lamps.

Highbeam headlights work but no low beam, it is not the switch........?

Check voltage at the circuit box and test the high/low dimmer switch. Corrosion on a ground wire could also be the problem.
