Question about 2000 Ford Focus

1 Answer

We own a 1965 Ford Falcon wagon, restored...289 V-8 with a C-4 auto trans...starter binds up with the fly wheel. Unless a washer is placed between the bell housing and the starter. Thanks for any help you can offer~ I understand there are multiple combinations of these parts in a Ford of this age. John and Cathy Avila

Yes you are right there were several applications, and as I remember it there were a couple different nose pieces for those starters, matter of fact we had problems with this back in the early 70s. I am using poor memory now but it seems to me that there was a later starter nose for the 302s that fit up there, and this starter was found on all ford products with the 289 or 302 and C-4 trans. One suggestion I have is to get a copy of the Hemmings Motor Car News, and check some of the advertisers in there for vintage starter parts and rebuilds.

Possible. That, or maybe the starter has the wrong gear in it...there could be different ones, but I don't know for sure on this particular application.

Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.

97 Ford Power Stroke, starting problem.

Does the starter engage the drive gear with the action of a solenoid? It may not be pushing (pulling) the gear far enough. There may be a slipping ring gear on the flex-plate. If you pull the starter again, you can try to see if the ring moves in and out or appears to be slipping around on the flex-plate. The flex plate could be loose on the crankshaft. In any case, the engine or the transmission would have to come out. Check the starter engagement before removing the torus and flex-plate.
