We had exactly the same problem and after replacing the fuel filter, replacing the mass airflow sensor did the trick.

Depending on the actual code for the O2 sensor, the fuel pressure may be low at times. You may want to look at fuel pressure and delivery.

Check the EVAP system canister purge valve, usually located on or near the canister itself which should be near the fuel tank. If the valve is clogged or stuck, it will cause excessive backpressure in the vapor return system, which sounds like what is happening here. Good luck, hope this helps.

1997 Ford Escort stalling when going 35 mph or less.

You may need to be looking at your Torque Converter being in LOCK UP and forcing it to stall because the Transmission is not letting go of the Motor...

You may also have a Plugged CAT CONVERTER

Test the Temp BEFORE and AFTER.. There should be an INCREASE of at least 100 degrees on the BACK from the Front

How do you know that the FUEL PUMP is working? you have one of 3 issues

a. Fuel Filter is Clogged
b. Fuel Pump is not providing enough pressure (40 PSI required)
c. Ignition Module is going bad.

My guess is Fuel Filter or Fuel Pump. Put a Gauge on it and read the pressure... You may find out that you have a pump making noise and not providing enough fuel pressure

near the throttle body there is an adjusting screw(flat head) for air fuel mixture, it's on a deep cavity sometimes with a cover, adjust counterclockwise will increase the idle.

If it's a 7.3 deisel, your timing could have jumped one tooth or your injector pump slipped one way or another. Pull your pump, lines and gear and engrave a line straight up from the timing mark so you can see it when you reset the timing gear.

Stalling problem when coming to a stop

Do you know what your AIS motor (automatic idle speed) is on your throttle body.Usually held on with torx screws 2 or 3. Thses are pretty well known for gumming up & sticking. It adjusts your idle automatically under load etc. If your take it off, spray it with throttle body cleaner & be sure to spray some in the port (hole it came out of) before you re-assemble it. Sometimes this will cure it or at least improve it enough that you know your in the right area, if replacement part needed.
