It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.

95 jeep grand cherokee will run fine for few days then will cut out...tach will drop to zero...then sput sput..and sometimes will jump back up and keep going...other times it will stall completely, and...

With all the stuff going on...seems to take me to the battery and the power distribution box near the battery. Ensure all the battery connections are clean and free of any dirt or corrosion.
A little bit of corrosion will block 12vdc either completely or in part.
That positive battery post (+) provides power to the computer which in turn can make things pretty flaky if it doesnt get its power.
Not to mention, the power distribution box provides power thru relays to the fuel pump, ignition system, the starter and a host of other "car bodily functions"...

I'd have that section of the car gone over with a fine tooth to speak.

Hope this helps...

My car was driving fine, was on hwy coming home from work and it just shut off completely. Once I started it back up it drove rough. Turned out that I needed the computer replaced. Now a day after having that done and $1600 later my car jumps, Theft light comes on and reading posts of other owners who have had the same issue but their cars stall completely. Best advice I can give after my repairs is get rid of it. Easier said than done I understand but I have spent about $4k in the last 6 months on this vehicle. Had enough.

96 jeep cherokee backfire through throttle body

I am going to take a stab at I think you may have a head gasket that has blown out. The head gasket will cause a lil white smoke, and make idling extremely rough. Sometimes water will fill up in the top of the cylinder in the compression chamber when this leak, even minor occurs. That would explain some of the compression issues. Obviously with no compression it will not run properly or even fire if there is water vapor pentrating into chamber mixing with fuel giving you that white smoke/steam.

These are somewhat time consuming to change, but not difficult. The backfiring is caused by the computer trying to compensate for the firing issue. The computer when you change the head gasket is easy to fix. After repairng gasket, try to start the car a few times but not allowing it to run as it will just continue backfiring. Turn key off, let the vehicle set about 30 minutes or so, then go back and the vehicle should run properly again.

Let me know,

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Stalls out, engine quits running

since its a 1997 your jeep has EFI, electronic fuel injection. The most probable reason for your troubles would be the injectors or a problem with the computer controling them, not allowing enough gas to be pushed into the cylinder causing stalling or lack of power, also too much gas iin the cylinder can lead to back firing and stalling. This would also explain the reason it takes so long to start back up some times, all the excess gas in the cylinder is flooding the motor and u have to wait till the gas disipates till the engine will turn over.

Car was driving fine down hiway, died and will turn over but backfired, have changed plugs, computer, & now cam sensor, what else would it be?

Dear Sir/madam,

Does the check engine light come on when the key is turned on? If it dont come on then i would check the fuses. If thats ok you may have a bad ignition module or cam shaft sensor,

good luck
