I recently went through the same condition and it turned out to be a broken camshaft (97 buick 3.1 v6) i got it to run (poorly and backfiring) but had no oil pressure. theses camshafts are made of tubes with the lobes and journels pressed on. if you have no oil pressure might check this out.

Have you checked the timing belt at all? How many miles are on this car because possibly it has stretched and possibly has skipped a little on one or both of the camshafts. If you intend on replacing it after finding out that the marks don't line up on the gears, then I also recommend replacing the water pump. The crankshaft gear should have an arrow to line up to another arrow on the engine and the camshaft gears should have a line on which lines up between two dots on the engine on each side.

Since you mentioned points, I'll assume that we are talking about an old engine. Plugs were gapped at .035" and the points were set at .016" . These are nominal values and they should be close enough to get you in the ball park and have the engine run fairly good.

Check the timing on the engine, it may have slipped and you are running the timing too advanced. Burnt or leaking valves will also cause backfiring. Check the air fuel ratio and make sure it is not running too lean.

Dear Sir/madam,

Does the check engine light come on when the key is turned on? If it dont come on then i would check the fuses. If thats ok you may have a bad ignition module or cam shaft sensor,

thanks
good luck

    Dear sir/madam,

Sounds like your head gasket is gone your your leaking coolant into your engine(the engine overheated). This cause engine not to turn over. Make sure there is not a whiteish colour to the oil ... too much oil? check dipstick. Pull all of the spark plugs and do a
compression check on all of the cyclinders. They should ALL have 85-125
    lbs psi.

Either it could be the starter dragging or the solenoid is bad. make sure your battery is fully charged.

    thanks
    good luck

Working on a 1997 buick century, 3.1. Car died, and left me stranded, did not restart.

Check compression. I have a feeling you have a broken cam shaft which is pretty common for these vehicles.

also you never mentioned if you actually checked for spark at the spark plugs. If the plugs are wet with fuel than the Crank sensors are working since the computer needs that signal to determine injector pulse and spark.

If there is no spark out of the coil pack or the wires at the plugs than there is a good chance the ignition module under the coils is bad.

good luck and keep me up to date with any findings or new info and ill do my best to guide you in the right direction.

Truck won't start

If by your description I'm assuming you say "NO START" you mean it cranks but don't start..? Depending on the YR, make & model Poss. defective module? or switch itself, pickup (if app) Wrong plugs, mass air flow sensor (if app) Any C/E LTS? Scan PCM , also ck coolant system readings & ck emissions when running., crank & cam sensors are popular for that problem along with the module and pickup coil too. It's Long list but I would start with a scan of the PCM & check those crank & cam sensors 1st. Good Luck

Car died one day taking a right hand turn. checked fuel pump, changed fuel filter changed cap and rotor, checked mass air flo sencor. backfires gas out the intake. it will idle but as soon as u give it gas...

Pull that distributor cap and watch the rotor as it is cranked. If the rotor doesn't turn the timing chain is broken and causing your problem. If it doe look at the crank position and Cam Position sensors.

My RV cam broke in my jeep.

Possible low/insufficient oil to the heads/cam causing the cam to lock. Excessive sludge build up, or defective/worn head or cams. I would have the camshaft lobes checked for scorging, warping before replacement. Hopefully this helps

Jumped timing?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.
