Went to start 2002 explorer xlt. it clicked & theft dash light started blinking. (no alarm went off) all functions stopped working. No power at all. messed with the ignition a few times, turned items on & off. Finally everything came on & the truck started up. Worked ok for a few days. Now while driving the theft light is blinking & the radio keeps turning on & off. Would not start again this morning. did same thing turning items on & off. Finally started. We have no remote. only 1 key with chip in it.. What can we do to eliminate this problem?

I would start by checking your battery terminals. Sounds like you have a loose connection, most likely a ground. If all looks good at the battery work your way to the solenoid and the ground at your engine as well as the "hot" cable at the satarter. I believe it is as simple as that. there could be a short somwhere in the ignition switch but most of the time when they are bad they are bad, if you know what i mean. I hope this helps but that's where to start and good luck.

Take your Explorer to a Autozone, Oreillys, or Advance autoparts store and ask them to test the battery and your Starter. They will do it free and you may get them to scan the onboard computer for free as well.

Once you are done with that, depending on what you find, a simple cleaning of the battery post and cables may be all you need. I would wait until you get tested before cleaning anything because you want everything checked.

When you lose everything like you did, it is probably the Battery. The anti-theft will trigger when the power is low, on some models the Alternator will stop charging intermittently. Jumping the vehicle will not correct it. Your Keychip will not make the radio cut out.

Post a message of what was found at the Autoparts place.

Is the red light on the top center of the dash pad flashing fast when trying to start ? The engine doesn't turn over ?
Anti-theft system problem !
PATS uses a visual theft indicator. This indicator will prove out for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START under normal operation. If there is a PATS problem, this indicator will either flash rapidly or glow steadily when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START. PATS also "blips" the theft indicator every two seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual theft deterrent.
PATS differs from the perimeter anti-theft system in that PATS enables and disables the engine from starting. If equipped, the perimeter anti-theft system protects the perimeter of the vehicle (doors, hood and trunk) and sounds an alarm.
The PATS is not compatible with aftermarket remote start systems, which allow the vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. Remote start systems must be removed before investigation of PATS-related No Start issues.

How to bypass factory anti theft on 1998 ford expedition

Attention to everyone with this problem. The alarm light will always blink when vehicle is not in operation but blinks slow. This is normal. You only have a problem if you cannot start vehicle. This is a sign there was a "attempted" theft of your vehicle. If this is the case, you will usually have to do like others have suggested. A new key and or fob, etc. Hope this helps. I went through this embarrassment when I "drove" my 2000 Explorer to the dealership and was informed of the same thing I just explained. Seems reading the owners manual sometimes will answer some of the most seemingly complicated questions:)

Anti theft will stop it from starting. Try locking and unlocking the drivers door with the key to reset .

Try leaving the key in on for 10-15 minutes. If the blinking theft light stops blinking and goes out, it has reset. Turn key to off, and then try to start it.

Won't start

very well could be due to anti theft issue. i don't recall the keys getting locked in the ignition from this though. try turning the key to the on postion- not cranking and leave it there for 15 min, then turn back off. do this three times. you may get a blinking light on the dash- don't worry about it. on the fourth try and start it. what you are doing is telling the alarm- i have the proper keys so let me take my car!

2002 ford explorer xlt with no dashboard functions

Yes, just removed #17 fuse and reinstalled and everything returned. Maybe bad connection, or maybe something was drawing current and that's it's function, (cut power) but it just didn't reset? (Owner's manual lists one function of Circuit #17 as "Battery Saver')

Theft system is stuck on

disconnect your battery for six Min's and re attach the post clips. this will reset the alarm board function. if the problem persist, the theft system is failing and will unfortunately have to be replaced or deactivated.
