1990 - Broken timing belt. Have put new one on, need clarification on timing. Does alternator need to be conected. Is it 100% of the time that valves and pistons will be damaged. Car runs for a few seconds then stops.

On that type of motor it is a very good chance that the valves were damaged

1990 toyota tercel just quit running while going home. battery okay, spark plugs okay. when I start it grinds, but doesn't fire

sounds like timing belt or chain has broke or maybe a timing gear. I would not advise trying to start it if this is the problem because you run the risk of bending the valves. TRY this to determine if it is the timing. Take cap off off valve pan cover " where you put the oil in " and using a flash light look down into the hole and have someone try to start it. IN most cases if the timing is out wou will see no movement of the rocker arms....hope this helps and good luck....

Timing belt toyota tazz 2003 model

Some cars when the timing belt breaks thepistons hit the valves. To check put the car in gear and try to turn theengine over by pushing it backwards and forwards, alternately put a spanner onthe bottom pulley and try turning it. If it turns without a problem it shouldbe ok. If it did hit the valves it will have bent them, but the rings shouldnot be affected. You will need to take the head off to see damage.

I have 2001 Hyundai sonata and time belt and valve are broken

Must have Cylinder Head reconditioned at a shop $275-400, and replace broken belt and bearings with a new timing component kit $100. Labor varies by location as a guess.. $400 for a single head and $600 for V-6. Gasket set $100. If its a V-6 both heads need to come off and be serviced.

all in all about $1100 for a 4 cylinder and $1300 for a V-6.
Not a do it yourself project. Call around different shops for prices and warranty on work.

Good Luck!

Need to set the timing on a 1990 maxima

im not sure about your car but some cars are interference engines, meaning if the timing belt breaks the valves will hit the pistons and it will bend the valves and the car will not run again just by putting a new belt on it,,hopefully thats not the case but alot of import cars are interference engines,,good luck

I had the same thing happen, No, I was told this is not one of the engines that allows the piston to contact the valves. I replaced the timing belt 2 years ago and had no valve problems.

Broken timing belt need to know if it bent any valves

The only ways that I know of is to either take apart the valves and check them, or put in the new timing belt and start it up and listen to the valve train. If the timing belt broke under power there is a good chance of valve damage.

Timing belt and alternator belt both broke. Chance of cylinder damage?

hi 94 metro 180,000 on the clock save your money the valves will have hit the piston so they will be bent and only if your lucky the pistons might not be damaged but then you do the head it will blow the bottom half of the engine out before to long and you have to find out what the oridginal problem is and put right cut your loses sell the car as weigh in valve scrap you should get £100-£150 put it to another car
