Brake Lights Come On With The Running Lites

I just bought a used 1990 DL and found that the brake lights come on when I turn on the running lights and do not come on when I push on the brake pedal. The center brake light on the rear package shelf does work when I push on the brake pedal and doesn't come on when I turn on the running lights like the left and right brake lights do.

I need specific help and can read a wiring diagram. The previous answer I got said "you have a wiring problem, check the fuse or take it to a shop". This reply was not much help. I know I have a wiring problem; the fuse is OK (brake lights do come on but with the running lights instead of the brake pedal). Help!

The center brake light on the rear package shelf and the left and right brake lights do work when I push on the brake pedal. However when I turn on the running lights the center brake light doesn't come but the left and right brake lights do. I carefully checked the bulb filaments and they are fine. I need specific help and can read a wiring diagram. A previous answer I got said "you have a wiring problem, check the fuse or take it to a shop". This reply was not much help. I know I have a wiring problem; the fuse is OK. Brake lights do come on when the pedal is pushed but also come on brightly with the running lights without the brake pedal being pushed. Help!

I have a similar issue. I purchase aftermarket tail lights for my 1996 Lexus SC400. My old lights had 8 bulbs each. new has 4.
Everything works fine, until I turn on the headlights. Then my 3rd brake light and brake lights come on. Course since the brake lights are on, nothing happens when I hit the brake. Turn headlights off and brakes lights only come on when I press the pedal. I did notice the brake socket has 2 connection dots and the bulb only has one. I check at the auto store and it appears to be the correct bulb.

Hi... On your VOLVO this problem can be a WRONG BULB. On any one of the sockets.
OK.. The TAILS Lights and STOP lights it's use the Same BULB. But with DOUBLE CONTACT. "1157"
But ONLY on WAGON Models.
ON sedan Use a individual BULB for each one.

I recomend Remove the stop LIGHTS BULBS.
Inpect and be sure to have 2 CONNTACT.
Replace if need.
I'm sure this gonna fix your problem.
OK Now, the Center light work Because use a Individual CIRCUIT. And signal from the Little MODULE Called.
BULB FAIL SENSE MODULE.

OK... I hope this help on your problem.
Thank you for use fixya.

With all of the lighting circuits going through the Lamp Outage Module (LOM) I think replacing all the bulbs and insuring that they are the correct bulbs would be a good first step. If the problem still occurs, then I would have to suspect a bad LOM and a replacement would be needed. You can get a new one from a dealer or possibly a salvage yard near you by checking www.car-parts.com.

You will need to change them since these light have two filaments inside and the one for the brakes are burnt out. Take them out and do a visual inspection on them and you might be able to see that one filament is open.

This can be a wiring problem why you have this happening on your car, you can check the fuse for the barke light sometimes that's where the problem is..or better take it to a electrical shop and let them correct this problem...

Good luck........

SOURCE: 1990 Volvo DL Sedan Brake Lites Work but Also Come on With Running Lites

Is there a switch on the left side of the dash that has a red lens and a wavy line across it? If so, you have a rear fog light switch and it has been activated, causing your brake lights to come on each time you turn your headlights on. Flip the switch and the rear lights should display only the parking lights with the headlights on.

Check the switch on the brake pedal first, then if you have power to it and power goes out when pedal is pushed you probably have a broken wire under the chasis

I have a 2005 GMC Envoy. Have tail lites but no brake lites. Third lite on top works whet brakes applied

Since the high mounted brake light works you know that the brake light switch is working. Now you need to check the brake light bulbs in the rear tail light assemblies. The brake lights are separate from the tail light (parking or running lights). There are two screws that hold the rear light assemblies in place.

I have headlights and running lites, press brake pedal, no brake lites

Pull on your parking lights to see if they come on in the back.If the parking lights work and you still don't have brake lights then I would try replacing the brake switch and check all of your fuses just to eliminate any question of it being a fuse. The brake switch is located under the dash attached to the brake pedal. Also check the bulbs to also eliminate them.it sounds like your brake switch is bad.

Tail lights and brake lights not working - not fuse - what can it be?

Brake light switch, located on upper brake pedal should be checked, that is most likely your brake light issue, but U say tail lights aren't working, but running lights do, tail lights and running lights I would consider to be the same, so can u clarify that for me? Let me know how the u do w/ brake light switch, and if u have issue w/ tail lights?
