1. unplug the ignition cord from disrubutor ( in the center) try a start and check it if there is any ignition. If there is spark , the problem could be in distrubutor cap, there is a coil in it with spring, coil can be short to touch to dispensing reel. Or check for the platin adjustment.

2.Check the ignition coil's eletricity. There are 3 cables on it. I the center it goes to distrubutor. An the other two marked with the numbers ( mostly 1 and 15) 1 is negative side and the 15 is positive. And then turn the ignition swith don't start the starter.Check for if there is any eletricity. If there is no check the fuses.

Check the gages light come on and engine was hot

If you tell your mechanic one complaint, that is what they are going to focus on. Most midlevel techs wont check all your fluids . If you didn't mention to them about your possible trans issue ,then they are likely not going to check your fluid.

Wont start when it gets wet out side

suspect water and moisture getting into the ignition distribution cap. this causes ignition sparks to random.

open the distribution cam and see if there is any moisture in it, if so dry off best possible and spray with WD40 or other like substance this will dispurse water and give a better eletrical contact.

ensure cap is replaced the correct way as removed.

You have an eletrical problem. Do not use it until you find the problem. For safety I'd disconnect the battery ground (negative) to help avoid a possible fire.
