Question about 1990 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

1990 Nissan Maxima Hard Starting

My 90 Maxima used to start very quickly, almost instantaneously, one or two turns. Unfortunately, I had to leave it sit for over 9 months in the sun and over the winter. I replaced the battery. It runs fine while driving (no stalls or hesitation), but takes 10 seconds of hard cranking to finally start. I put in a bottle of Techron Fuel System cleaner (thinking gasoline varnish), but haven't noticed an improvement yet (2 days). I am considering another bottle of Techron and possibly replacing the fuel filter. From what I describe, is this the right way to go or do you think I should be looking somewhere else for the problem... plugs, wiring, etc.?

I recomand for your NISSAN.
replace the fuel filter, because they are Built on Metal and Cartoon, Throught the time The metal come corroded. The cartoon to fail apart.
Making a Obstruction of the Fuel pressure.

Replace the Air Filter. and inspect the Spark plugs.
They come corroded at outside of the Body. making the spark droped a metal.
Check the condition of the wires.

But one of the more important things IS The Distributor CAP and ROTOR. with the pass of the time they come corroded inside on the contact to each Spark plug wire.
Just Remove and Inspect, clean as nessesary. or replace.

Don't Put to much ADDITIVES. on a Single Fueled tank.
You can use if you want. But depend of the indication on back of the Bottle. Example. 1 for up to 20 gallons. 1 for up 25 gls. ECT...

OK... I hope this help on your question. and try to fix your vehicle//

Thank you for use fixya.....

You can easily verify broken timing belt with a quick compression test. I cannot think of another cause for that symptom.

1990 maxima intermitent starting and missing issue

Check your coolant for traces of oil and your oil for a hand-creme like substance; you could have a failing headgasket.
Depending on where the gasket fails, you can have coolant entering the cylinders when the engine cools and contaminating the plugs; check those for any signs of rust. This will of course, cause hard starting and missing until somewhat warmed.   You can also have oil enter the coolant system or leaks of either running down the side of the block.
If it has progressed far enough, checking the compression may show the loss.
