Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country

1 Answer

1997 jeep I have a 1997 jeep cherokee 4.0 I was going down the road and it quit after about three minutes of driving time. i thought it may have been the catalitic converter. after haveing it replaced it wouldn't start while it was on the lift. we disconnected the exhaust and it ran. after sitting it will start once and idle but not drive. if turned off it won't start again unless gas is pushed all the way to the floor. it has a bent pipe coming off the headers could this cause the problem.

Dont know what you mean about "a bent pipe coming off the headers" it sounds to me the exhaust gas cannot escape out of the system past the CAT, is there any exhaust gas coming out of tailpipe ? put your hand there to feel the pressure whilst someone else revs up, if little or no pressure just disconnect the back box (if possible) this is the coldest part of the system and all the exhaust water ends up there, baffles drop and block outlet. good luck

If that's a 4 wheel drive make sure the front gear ratio matches the rear ratio or you'll destroy the gears everytime. I had the same problem with my '97 Grand Cherokee..

mine also will quit going down the road, and idles high at times, or idles low, like having a mine of it's own. possibly idle air speed solenoid (which i replaced on mine) and still does this. another tech said only factory solenoid will "talk" to ecm properly?

The heater just up and quit working in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with no warning whatsoever. I can feel heat coming through the vents when going down the road, but the fan isn't working on any speed....

Does the fan work on A/C? If the fan isn't blowing, check the fuse. Heat when going down the road is simply an indication that the air from outside is coming through the system. If fuse is fine, blower motor is probably out.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Will die going down the road. Sometimes it starts back up without me touching the key.other times I have to wait a few minutes before it will crank again.Any suggestions? Thank...

I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?

1997 jeep cherokee headlights quit working at the same time and will not come back on.

check the position of the automatic headlights switch. If it is placed in the auto position and the road becomes lit then the lights will go off automatically. Before condemning the switch try placing in it on the other positions. If the switch works fine, try checking the headlights relay, there are two relays (one is for the automatic headlights)
