Question about 2003 Ford Escape

While driving , the motor skips a cuple beats & all the gauges peg way over to max ! then bounce back !

    new battery term, new battery, alt , all new ! neg cable to top of motor new ! found 2 ground cables from motor to firewall, cleaned & replaced ! would it show up on a diagnostic analysis mach ? while driving ?

    no codes indicated or recorded ! ive scanned for EEC ! runs smooth when not in glitch mode ! no misfires cannot be herd or felt . it happened just sitting still here in drive way !

Is the check engine light on? Is it misfiring? If the DTC codes from an EEC test, free from Autozone, it could be COPs, coils on spark plugs. The check engine light will usually falsh n and off indicating raw, unberuned fue getting into catalytic converters. They will overheat and destroy themselves and they are part of exahust manifold. Very expensive. ad COPs can take out the PCM, engine computer.

If CEL light is on or flashing, get codes read first.

    The mising engine grounds can cause all kinds of weird problems, so good you found them off. You can always add a new ground from the frame to the engine just for insurance. No codes tells me it's a base engine issue, not an electronci engine control issue. It could be spark or fuel related. Has it pegged the gages since you fixed the grounds? I will check for TSBs for your issue too.
    Pay close attention to symtoms, rainy, or not, cold engine or hot, high humidity or not, etc.

    Need your email address to send a TSB that might apply. It's for 201-02 but may apply to 2003. Wat engine do you have, 4cyl or 6 cyl?

    Ask the customer if they have significant weight (approximately 9 oz or more) hanging from the key ring while the keys are in the ignition. If they do, and the engine quits while traveling over bumps, the key ring may move the ignition cylinder out of the Run position and stop the engine. When this occurs, all gauges immediately shut off (fuel reads "E", tachometer goes to zero, speedometer goes to zero immediately). It is recommended that the customer attach fewer keys to the key ring that retains the vehicle ignition key. Proceed to Step 8.
    Road the test vehicle long enough to experience 3 closed throttle decelerations from approximately 40 mph down to 10 mph. Use scan tool to examine engine RPM during test. Ensure there are no engine RPM dips below 680 RPM.

    FORD: 2001 2002 ESCAPE

    ISSUE
    Some vehicles equipped with the 3.0L Duratec engine may exhibit an intermittent engine quit condition. This is usually a one time event during closed throttle deceleration with no Diagnostic Trouble Codes DTCs and no Malfunction Indicator Lamp MIL. The engine will restart immediately.

    ACTION
    When normal diagnostics cannot pinpoint the root cause, refer to the following Driveability Checklist for details.

    SERVICE PROCEDURE
    With the transmission in Park, the engine should be at idle at approximately 750 RPM, and the engine temperature should be at least 190 F. All accessories and the engine cooling fan should be off. Using only WDS version B17.1 or later, verify that Idle Air Control IAC duty cycle is between 32 to 40 per cent with no purge flow. If IAC duty cycle is within specification, then proceed to Step 2 now. If IAC duty cycle is out of specification, replace IAC with part YF1Z-9F715-AA. Verify that IAC duty cycle is between 32 40 with no purge flow. If IAC duty cycle is within specification after replacing with a new IAC, then proceed to Step 2 now. If IAC duty cycle is still out of specification, replace throttle body with part YL8Z-9E926-DA. Verify corrective action, then proceed to Step 2.
    NOTE: ENGINE RPM WILL SLOWLY RAMP UP. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO CHECK THE IAC DUTY CYCLE WHEN THE RPM IS AT 750 RPM. EVEN 800 RPM IS TOO HIGH FOR CHECKING IAC DUTY CYCLE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS.

You have an intermittant electrical connection to the ignition,or if this occurs especially on bumpy roads it can be about anywhere in an electrical system,start first, at a stand still try wiggling the ignition key(up&down) ,a little bit,as not to shut the vehicle off,but to see if possibly there can be a bad connection/contact internally inside this key switch,also grounds on the body have been known to cause high resistance connections and when you hit bumps they make & break connections also,this could be a very hard one to find,especially if it happens very sparodically

Oil pressure gauge drops to zero and comes back up to 80


Hello, this problem is due to a failing stepper motor. The stepper motor is the motor behind the gauge that controls the
movement of the needle. When a stepper motor begins to go out it will cause the gauge needle to stick, skip around, stay
at zero or max out on the gauge. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the stepper motor with a new one. While
replacing one motor it is best to go ahead and replace them all as the others will go out in time as well. Youre cluster

The check gages light comes on and off while driving, at the same time, the oil pressure gage drops and then bounces back up after hitting zero


There a couple of possibilities; you could have an intermittent oil pressure switch or an intermittent stepper motor in the instrument cluster. The stepper motor drives the gauge.

When I turn on the motor the gauges bounce from max to zero, windows & a/c & overhead gauges don't work. When I shut the engine off and turn on the auxillary everything works? Just started...


I had the same problem with mine and it was the alternator. I took it out and up to an electric repair shop and they fixed it for 75 bucks. That was a cheap fix compared to buying another one. That was last summer.

The needle on the gauge is pegged out? it does not zero out but has no impact on performance of truck.


my oil pressure gage pegs out to the max mainly on incline or accleration, i can bring back down to zero once i shut off the engine and bump the ignition repeatdely to pull back down to zero reset.

Temp and fuel gauges both peg out pass full & hot


GM had gauge cluster problems from 2000-2005. Bad stepper motors. On those units you have to replace the cluster or rebuild it with new stepper motors. Dealership fixed mine for $150.00

My oil pressure gauge is bouncing all around on my 2003 Chevy Avalanche. It bounces from the low end to the high end and everywhere in between. Any idea what might be causing this?


Sounds like the oil pressure sensor. Thatt is the easiest thing to change. If not its the gauge. Put voltage to the wires from the switch and see if the gauge stops jumping and stays pegged, if it does its the switch Good luck

Speedometer does not function properly. needle


A faulty vehicle speed sensor will cause this.
It's mounted on the back end of the transmission where the drive shaft slides into, near the top, it's just held in with a bolt, on the right side of the tranny, also has a wire connection.

Temp gauge bouncing up an down


That vehicle has two coolant temp sensors on it, both are on the passengers side of the end of the head, where the thermostat housing is. One has a two wire plug, this one tells your fans to come on the other is one single pin, this one is for your temp gauge. This sensor works off resistance, the higher the resistance the higher the gauge in the car goes. This sensor has probably grounded out and pegged your gauge in the car. Replace that sensor and you should be good to good, not too expensive either. Good luck.

When my truck gets real hot the oil preasure guage starts bouncing when truck idles as soon as truck is put into park or is reved up a bit it stops bouncing


You may have a Faulty Oil Pressure Sender.
Here are some reason why your guage is bouncing:
  • Corrosion or faulty electrical connections
  • If the oil pressure gauge is pegged low after the engine is running, or is pegged high after the engine is running, or if there is intermittent illumination of an oil pressure indicator light, the sender could be faulty
You can find the oil sensor on the left hand side near the Oil Filter, as long as you don't hear your lifters ticking and making lots of noise. it's not your oil pump failing.
