Question about 1996 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Car will cycle between gears (4th @ 5th) at around 60 to 65 mph. Then when coming to a stop, if rpms drop below 1000 there is a good chance car will instantly stall. I often must wait 30 min for car to start again. when I acerlate, if the rpms drop by several hundred then head up and act normal I know when comming to a stop I had better have my foot on the break and one on the gas, keeping the rpms at about 1200 or there is a good chance the stall and then the 30 min. wait to start again. These symptoms are not always current, sometimes the car will run normal (or almost) for 30 to 45 min. Or start immediately from when I get in the car in the morning. Another indicator is if at idol, the rpms are a few hundred higher than normal you know the conditions are right for a stall. The car can cycle from normal to abnormal in a 20 min drive are be normal or abnormal in that same 20 min. I never know what car I'll be driving untill the fun begins! I have a 1995 4 cyl camary with 225000 miles. What do you think experts? and what would the cost of the repair be? Thanks for the help Scott

The most common possibility for this problem is dirty throttle body and dirty IAC valve.IAC means idle air control valve. This valve is located on throttle body.Get this both the throttle body and iac valve cleaned by throttle clearer. The throttle cleaner can be bought from local auto part store.Get it cleaned and checked. If the problem is same after cleaning, then most probably, the iac valve is faulty, and needs to be replaced.------ But if that is not helping, then other possibilities for this problem are clogged fuel filter and faulty fuel pump.Get the fuel pressure checked for your fuel flow. The fuel pressure can be checked at any local car garage. If the pressure checked out low then its faulty fuel pump and fuel filter issue. The pump and filter will need to be replaced. But if fuel pressure checked out ok, then get the o2 sensor checked.,The o2 sensor before and after catalytic converter.Get both both o2 sensors checked and cleaned.,If o2 sensor is faulty, then it will not send exact fuel ratio to the ecm.So ecm will not calculate the fuel flow and cause the problem.---------- If all checked ok, then problem is at the distributor, there is problem with distributor , distributor cab and its connection with coils. It has to be checked and replaced. But distributor problem is rarely seen in such cases. So keep it as a last option of troubleshooting.------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

The rpms seem higher on this vehicle than I am use to seeing, cruising at 80mph the car is hitting 4000rmps. Is this normal for this vehicle?

there is not enough specif details available to be able to be close to exact But I will give an example that you can compare
in a manual transmission with a diff ratio of 3.909 and in 5th gear the rpms for 79 mph is 3200 rpms
the difference between gears is around 250 rpms so if you try to correlate the differences if it was in 4th gear the rpms would be around 3750 rpms so I suspect that the over drive section of the transmission is not engaging ( assuming that it is auto transmission)
so to answer your question , I am saying that it is too high in rpms for that speed and I suspect that the od is not being engaged as the rpms at 80mph I would be looking at around 3200-3500 rpms depending on the diff ratio

Have an fx45.Should the tach read 25-3000 ROMs when moving at 75mph? Auto tranny seems like it should be in higher gear.

there is not info to be able to give a definite answer
to work it out
you have top know the diff ratio, wheel tyre circumference to be able to work from rpms of the engine to road speed
However as a pointer, most cars will be around 3200 rpms at 60mph as this will be direct drive and od causes a drop in rpms
Being an automatic find yourself a good section of low traffic road and start from stop slowly increase the rpms and watch the rpms. keeping the accelerator steady you will see when the auto changes by a drop in rpms. slowly increase road sped until you see the next drop in rpms and so on. Over drive normally comes in around 55 mph or around 3000rpms
I would think that it is working because 3500rpms at 75mph is reasonable rpms to be expected. If it wasn't working I would expect the rpms to be around 3800 to 4000.at 75mph

Hi all I own a 2006 RA Rodeo 3.6Ltr petrol dual cab it is a little heavy on fuel that's fine but when you put it into 5 gear it just drinks fuel nearly 1/4 tank to go 15-20 klms. Any ideas greatly app

The only thing that comes to mind is that in 5th, the rpms may be so low that you are running on low speed potion of ignition module, getting weak spark and not burning fuel properly. This could be true in all gears at low rpms, but you would not notice it as much because you probably keep the revs up more in lower gears. Just a thought.

I have a 2001 Ford escape xls 4x4 2.0 4cylinder and when driving down interstate at 75 mph in 5th gear my rpms are running at 3500. Is this normal or what would be causing this? It sounds like it needs a...

That is a typical RPM at that speed for most 6-speed 4 cylinder engines. The reason for this is that they have a much lower power output at lower RPMs (due to lack of torque), and the engineers want for you to have SOME acceleration to get up little hills.

check clutch for slipping condition, mayb due to worn clutch disc or a oil contaminated disc or a weak pressure plate not locking disc to flywheel therefore giving u a slipping condition and higher than normal rpms

When im driving in 5th gear the RPM's seem high around 3500 is this normal?

I, also, thought this was high at first. After some research, I found that this car runs in that range at about 75 mph. So, yes. That is normal.
