Question about 2005 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Standard Roof

1 Answer

Own a 2006 Sprinter Van have a squeal in my serp belt just at start up then goes right away. If I get the belt wet it do's not make the noise at start up. If I get the belt wet at the pulley above the alternator it will not make that noise. When it dry's out the noise will return at only start up again. I believe it is that pulley. Can the pulley make the noise if its bad, making the noise at just start up.

The noise seems to be coming from the pulley above the alternator only at start up. If I get the belt wet the noise is not there at start up at all until it dries out. Only at start up! If I get the belt wet only on the PULLEY and Belt area that is located above the alternator and start it "no noise" I recently replaced the water pump alternator and pulleys. That pulley above the alternator seems to be were the noise is coming from. When I have the engine running I notice that, the pulley roller is shifting about 1-8th to 1-4 of an inch from side to side not tracking the belt perfectly. Would a bad pulley bearing cause the squeal noise just at start up.

The problem got worse last night when my sprinter went into limp mode. Engine and low tire and ABS lights came on.Only had first gear and little power. With further investigation from my tech found out that the alternator that I had installed about two months ago was putting out 16.5 volts,to much volts,. its a aftermarket alternator. My tech found numerous codes on his computer. And the hose connecting the air cleaner to the Turbo had a large crack in it. I am having a new OEM alternator installed and hose installed in the morning. My tech checked the fuses to the ECU or is it the ECM, they are good. Could the ECU or ECM have been damaged because of the alternator putting out that excessive voltage even if the fuses are good to the ECU or ECM . And would the bad alternator be the cause of the belt making noise at start up. And would the crack in the hose from the air cleaner to the turbo cause the limp mode .

The easiest way to check this is to remove the belt and check by hand the resistance (and see if the pulleys can be twisted laterally indicating bed bearingsraces) of the various pulleys. The only one you wont be able to turn is the crank pulley, but you can check the tensioner (most common noise culprit) water pump, ac compressor pulley, power steering pulley-they should all turn freely, with no side-to-side wobble at all.

the pulley that is not turning 'true' is most probably the issue, if it is a tensioner pulley especially since they take a variable load at high rpm's in all sorts of conditions.

the alternator is most probably the reason you had that noise, putting out full unregulated voltage will put quite a load on the front serpentine belt. As to wiether it will cause any problems with your ECU, I doubt it, it is fused and it doesn't sound like it was going on for a long time- The crack in the hose could easily have caused the car to go into limp mode since it could have been detected by the ECU as some kind of major intake malfunction, expecially considering the voltage to sensors was skewed by the alternator's having no regulator.

Had radiator replaced n a bolt put on alternator which is ok. New noise in idle...it squeals. Gets worse when a/c is on. In idle I pop hood N noise goes away. 2006 tiburon 4 cyl auto

Probably should replace the belt. A worn belt will squeal sometimes.'
Another thought is the belt tight enough A belt that is too loose will squeal under stress .

Makes squealing noise

The squeal would be the alternator slipping on the belt. I would think either the newly installed belt is not the correct length, or the belt tensioner is no longer doing its job properly.

When i start my 2006 chevy silverado its making a squeking noise it sounds like its coming from the belt pullys but im not sure what else could it be

Check the belt tensioner they squeal when they fail due to constant spring pressure on the pulley> if you replace it I would suggest replaceing the belt unless it is new, check the alternator bearings ( spin it by hand with the belt off> they are known to fail)finally clean all pully and make sure the belt is perfectly clean and nothing on it before installing it. NOTE:Never get any grease on a serp belt it will make noise.

2006 Dodge Gr. Caravan. Loud humming noise upon

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

Recently replace the serp. and PS pump. Service engine soon light is on and something is squeaking badly.

anything could set the service engine soon light,,but the noise,,,did you bleed the power steering pump?if not turn car off turn wheel fully left and fully right about 30 times then check fluid level and top it off, then start car and do 30 times with car on see if noise goes away,,,,maybe you got something on the belt to make it wet and noisy?

Squealing noise

Check and tighten your drive belts / fan belts. The noise you are most likely hearing is the belt slipping on the alternator pulley. Its worse in the morning because the starter takes more out of the battery when the engine is cold. This in turn leaves the alternator with more load to replenish charge. More load = more resistance on the pulley to turn, hence the belt slips if too loose.

Unexplained squealing noise.

That usually means that the belt is loose. If it is loose it will make noise on start up and go away, but while running normal, if u make the pullys work more such as A/C, or something, you'll cause it to slip again, thus making it squeal and make noise. Another idea is if you only have one belt (a serp. belt) then if the tensioner, which is not adjustable by hand, is going bad could maybe cause this noise if the belt is slipping from not enough tension. An experienced tech would be able to tell if a tensioner is bad just by pulling on a belt and seeing what tension the belt has at the time. Hope this helps, good luck
