Question about 1998 Honda Civic

1 Answer

2002 Honda Civic is overheating. Anti-freeze goes in to the overflow tank but doesn't return into the radiator. The tank keeps filling up until it overflows. Already changed the thermostat, radiator cap, and there are no leaks in the system.

If its an overheating problem the cooling fans may not be coming on.this needs to be checked.it could also be a bad temperature sensor for the computer and its getting the wrong temp reading, thus not turning on the fans.there is also a cooling fan relay(not a problem that happens often).one other thing the impellers on the water pump may be worn out or not turning with the pump shaft.

Cooling system

Raise the car front end as high as possible with a floor jack, fill the coolant tank to the top, run the engine until it reaches just short of overheating, shut it down and run water over the radiator, this will burp the air out. Repeat as needed. Don't let the coolant recovery tank run dry during procedure.

My sister's car is overheating and I'm not sure where she can find her antifreeze so she can add water to it.

should be able to fill it in two places 1 is the radiator or the overflow tank but put anti freeze in it underless you are going to fix it right away

Where does the anti freeze go?

The anti freeze is poured into the radiator water and it is necessary as the water should not freeze when in cold weather which can cause serious damage to the parts sepccially the water pump, radiator, engine water jackets/ ports..

Do I add anti freeze to the radiator or the lid tat says coolant

IT DEPENDS SOME OLDERS CARS USE GREEN ANTIFREEZE.MOST NEWER VECHICLE USE DEXCOOL ORANGE ANTIFREEZE.YOU NEED TO LOOK UP TO SEE WHAT TYPE ANTIFREEZE VECHICLE USE BEFORE PUTTING ANY IN SYSTEM.IF YOUR CAP SAY COOLANT THEN THATS WHERE YOUR ANTIFREEZE GOES.

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee is overheating after flushing the radiator and changing the thermostat. It is blowing cold air

Did you make sure you filled the radiator up and got the overflow tank up to the correct level? Sometimes when you flush and drain the system and fill it back up air pockets can get trapped in the system. Start the jeep up with the radiator cap off and wait for the coolant to start flowing and when the air pockets make their way through they will escape and you can add more antifreeze.

Also, did you make sure you installed the thermostat so it is facing the right direction?

Good Luck

1990 Honda Civic low kms. overheated, added

I want you to take a couple of spark plugs out and examine them. If you find Anti-freeze on them then you may have a blown headgasket. A very common problem of driving a car until it overheats. I really do hope im wrong. Since it is an overhead valve engine with the cam shaft above...its a 1000.00 to 1500.00 dollar job to have it properly repaired. From here out im just going to explain why this happens...
When a car overheats - be it a faulty thermostat...low coolant...or a faulty water pump or improper coolant mixture ratio. The engine gets so hot that it actually makes the top of the engine change shape... it actually changes enough to damage the head gasket. The head gasket keeps the explosion inside the combustion chamber. Keeps the water in its coolant jacket. and keeps the oil inside its ports. When the Headgasket fails. Sometimes coolant gets into the oil (makes a milky residue form on the inside of the oil filler cap...or makes the engine oil look like chocolate milk.) or oil gets into the coolant (makes your coolant have an oil slick on top) It can also cause water to get into the combustion chamber and when the engine is running - blast the combustion back into the coolant (causes the coolant overflow to overflow or spray) or oil gets into the combustion chamber causing the plugs to get fouled (dirty). worse case...all the above happens. I hope this helps in figuring this problem out...i really do hope im wrong about a blown headgasket . As even i tremble in fear of it happening to my car. Good Luck!
