Question about 1990 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

I have a 1999 corvette coupe and the service column lock came across the dic this morning. It said take key out for 10 seconds which I did but still comes up with ser. column lock and the car turns off when letting out the clutch or hitting that 1/2 mile per hour spot. The wierd thing is that the column/sterring wheel is not locked. I'm able to manuver the car in the drive way but can't get any speed or it shuts down. Does this mean it has a kit in it already and there is another problem or what is your thoughts or suggestion

SOURCE: my 2000 corvette had a recall on the sterring

I would irately call the dealer and have him send a mechanic out to fix your car where it sits. If he has to tow it in, have them use a car hauler. It would not be unreasonable to expect a decent loaner and they can add it to the recall charge to the company.

How could i reset the security lock on a 1999 chevy corvette

I can't find a reset for that year of Corvette. It is a Passlock system. So maybe the normal 30 minute procedure will work.

Perform the re-learning procedure

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY light, after approximately 11 minutes the light will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 10 seconds.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes ( the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).

If not, this site may help. http://diy-gm-security.com/

This in my option is a do it yourself smal lproject ,these cyliders for the keys will wear and the keys will also cause this , actually there one in the same. Order the cylinder and keys (2) take ur time and remove all dash covers that restrick u from seeing this cylinder ,remove cylinder and makesure u get new keys and have them all sequenced before leaving the dealership. do not be surprised if this happens again but,I have just saved u approx $800.00for about 1.5hrs.I know i have had it done at dealership and have done this myself , another option is to save all parts and go over to a push button system , i may do it!!!! Have fun on ur 800.00 mini vaction !!! : ) oh yea u may need to have the computer reset.

MY STEERING COLUMN HAS LOCKED UP ON MY 2001 VETTE . BEFORE THAT HAPPENED THE READING ON THE DASH SAID TO PULL KEY AND WAIT 10 SECONDS

The locked steering column issue is a recall. If you take the car to a dealer, they will fix the problem.

The steering column is locked. I followed the directions in the manual but it remains locked and the next step, according to the manual is to tow it to the dealer. It is a 2000 Corvette

I had the same problem on mine ..... apparently their is a recall on the column lock mechanism, that needs to be replaced by the dealer. I had to have mine towed to the dealer for those repairs. The ended up charging me for another part that works with the column lock for 400.00. Please beware.. here is some more info on the Corvette column lock.
Hope this info helps...

IMPORTANT:

THIS BULLETIN CANCELS AND REPLACES BULLETIN 04006B, ISSUED NOVEMBER 2004. THE SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR U.S. VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REVISED. PLEASE REVIEW THIS NEW INFORMATION IMMEDIATELY.

ALL COPIES OF BULLETIN 04006B SHOULD BE DESTROYED.

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 1997-2004 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. When you remove the ignition key, the electronic column lock (ECL) system prevents turning of the steering wheel. When the vehicle is started, it unlocks the steering. Two conditions can prevent steering while the vehicle is moving:

1. The vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started, the fuel supply will be shut off if the driver tries to move the vehicle. If voltage at the powertrain control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering is locked.
2. During quick cranks, the ECL lock pin may not withdraw fully and, in vehicles where there is abnormally low clearance to the lock plate, there may be contact between the pin and lock plate. This can cause a noise or ratcheting when the steering wheel is turned or, if there is insufficient clearance, the steering wheel cannot be turned.

If one of these conditions occurs, a crash could occur without warning.

CORRECTION:
Dealers are to remove the column lock plate on U.S. and Canadian vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and U.S. vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. After the service correction, the steering column will no longer lock when the key is removed.

On Canadian and export vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, and export vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, Dealers are to 1) reprogram the PCM, and 2) verify there is adequate lock plate clearance and, if necessary, replace the lock plate. After the service correction, the steering column will continue to lock when the key is removed.

Refer to the Product Safety Bulletin #04006C for further information.

EFFECTIVE DATE:
Owner mailing is scheduled to begin February 15, 2006.
