The rear calipers on Buicks integrate the parking brake cable. This is a torsion spring which hooks into a slot in a bracket on the caliper, the other end is formed in a half round hook that is held in place by a special blot that attaches to the brake caliper and anchors the spring.Use large channel lock pliers to re-compress and install this spring.There is no special tool to reinstall the spring. The easiest way I have found, is to remove the parking brake cable from the lever. Install one end of the spring on the caliper. Using a vise grip (so the spring wont get away) twist the spring to attach the other end. You may have to remove the caliper and install it in a vise to secure while installing spring. If you remove the caliper, clamp off the brake hose, with a rag wrapped around the hose and a vise grip to pinch off the hose from leaking fluid. (not to tight) This way all you have to do is reinstall the caliper and bleed only the one caliper. ----------------

Install the cables through the caliper anchor mount. Then push the end of cable strand in to engage the cable end to the parking brake actuator.Feed the other end of the cables through the body and into the equalizer bracket.Push the cables into the upper suspension arm brackets.Install the cable retainer bolts to the rear spring pads.-----------

Fix emergency brake stuck


On 88-93 models the brake goes to the rear calipers. First you should release the brake and look at the little arms the cable attaches on each caliper. If the cable is moving but the arms are not, you need to replace the caliper(s). More likely you will see the cable is not moving, in which case the cable(s) need to be replaced. Swapping in parts, or trying to free up and lubricate existing parts will depend upon your skill set, time, and budget.

How do I adjust the emergency brake?


Over here we call it a parking brake - hardly any of our cars are autos.

Parking brakes usually connect to the rear disc brake calipers but some manufacturers use a small drum brake in the disc centre for parking purposes due to the complexity of the caliper with integral parking brake.

When adjusting a parking brake it is important in most designs for the cable to be adjusted only to remove any free play without moving the caliper levers from the backstops and then if the parking brake lever or pedal travel is excessive it must be because of wear or other faults. Sometimes that basic requirement must be taken with a pinch or two of "experienced" salt...

Ford have a self adjusting parking brake I have experience of. A spring within the system preloads the cable eliminating all slack in the cable so the cable moves the caliper levers from the first. The main problem with the system is the preload spring is sometimes strong enough to overcome the resistance of the caliper spring and cause a binding brake. No manual adjustment was provided.
In that case I find fabricating and fitting brackets to anchor additional return springs to the calipers is a must.

I need to change the pads on my 1991 Lebaron. Do the caliper pistons need to be turned as they're compressed like on some cars or can i just compress them without turning them?


The only time you need to turn and compress a piston on a caliper is on a vehicle that is equipped with rear calipers that also act as the emergency brake. These can be easily identified because the e-brake cable will attach to the caliper. The reason why they need to be turned is the parking brake works with a ratcheting mechanism inside of the caliper. The mechanism is overidden be turning the caliper and the caliper compresses.

no wrenches or sockets for caliper bolts and caliper retaining bracket and a c-clamp to compress the caliper piston ----if rotor is not releasing from the e-brake shoes will need a couple of wrenches to loosen the emergency brake cable line

I cant seem to get the rear brake caliper to compress so it will fit over the new pads


There are two stlyes of calipers for the rears. One is ratcheting so the piston has to be turned back to colaspe. The other type compresses with a C clamp. If a large retaining spring is on the inner part of the caliper you have the ratcheting type. A brake cable will attach to the spring as well. If not it will compress instead

How do I replace the front brake pads on my 2009 Mazda 6 2 litre? Can I do it myself?


Step 1 Park the Mazda 6 on a flat surface. Put the emergency brake on and put wedges behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Using a syringe, turkey baster or similar tool, drain two thirds of the brake fluid from the master cylinder. Remove the wheel.
  • Step 2 Remove the bolts attached to the brake pipe. Remove the bolt cap attached to the caliper top. Swing the caliper, pivoting it downwards. Suspend the caliper from the frame using mechanics wire. Remove the M-springs, the pads and the shims.
  • Step 3 Press the caliper pistons back into the cylinders. Install the brake pads. Lubricate the exterior of the pads using anti-squeal. Install the shims. Install the M-Springs. Reinstall the caliper. Using a torque wrench torque the bolt to 36 to 39-ft. lbs. Install the cap.
  • Step 4 Reinstall the wheels. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder. Bleed the brakes. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. Start the engine and pump the brakes 3 to 4 times to seat the brake pads. Test drive the Mazda 6 at slow to moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed correctly.I hope this helps you and please have a merry xmas

    Reinstall rear brake caliper on 2007 Jetta


    If you look at the piston on the Caliper it has 2 grooves on the face where the Brake pad mates to it. There is a special tool to push and turn the piston back into the caliper bore. that type caliper is also used to apply the parking brake. cable attached to rear of caliper and to an arm with a heavy spring. If you go to Harbor freight they have an inexpensive set for this.

    How to remove rear calipers


    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2. Matchmark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Reinstall two lug nuts to retain the rotor.
    4. If the caliper is being removed from the vehicle for replacement or overhaul, perform the following:
      • Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Plug the opening in the caliper and the brake hose to prevent fluid loss and system contamination.
      • Detach the parking brake cable by lifting up on one end of the cable spring clip to free the end of the cable from the lever.
    5. Remove the bolt and washer attaching the cable support brake to the caliper body assembly.
    6. Remove the sleeve bolt, then remove the caliper body assembly. Pivot the caliper body up to clear the rotor and then slide it inboard off the pin sleeve.
    7. If the caliper is being removed for shoe and lining replacement or to provide access to the support bracket, rotor of wheel brake components, hang the caliper from suspension using a suitable wire hook so as not to stretch or damage the brake hose or brake cable.
    8. Inspect the pin boot, bolt boot and sleeve for cuts, tears or deterioration. If damaged, replace the boots.
    To Install:
    1. Install the caliper assembly, as follows:
      • If not replaced, remove the pin boot from the caliper body assembly and install the small end over the pint sleeve (installed on the caliper support) until the boot seats in the pin groove. This is to prevent cutting the pin boot when the sliding body assembly onto the pin sleeve.
      • Hold the caliper body assembly in position it was removed and start over the end of the pin sleeve. As the caliper body assembly approaches the pin boot, work the large end of the pin boot in the caliper body groove. Then push the caliper body fully onto the pin.
      • Pivot the caliper body assembly down, using care not to damage the piston boot on the inboard shoe. Compress the sleeve boot by hand as the caliper body move into position to prevent boot damage.
      • After the caliper body assembly is in position, recheck the installation of the pad clips. If necessary, use a small prytool to re-seat or center the pad clips on the support abutments.
    2. Install the sleeve bolt and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    3. Fasten the cable support bracket (with the cable attached) with the retaining bolts and washer. Tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    4. If disconnected, attach the end of the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever by lifting up on the end of the cable spring clip and work the end of the parking brake cable into the notch in the lever.
    5. Unplug and attach the brake hose, if it was disconnected.
    6. Remove the two lug nuts retaining the rotor.
    7. Install the wheel and tire assembly, aligning the marks made during removal.
    8. Carefully lower the vehicle, then bleed the brake system if the brake hose was disconnected.
    9. Firmly depress the brake pedal 3 times to seat the pads against the rotors.

    I can't seem to compress calipers for replacing rear disc brake pads, why?


    open the blled valve and try to compress, if it does not compress make sure your emergency barke is not on, if it's not on then compress calipers if it won't compress you may have a sticking caliper,if sticking remove one caliper and push the brake pedal down it should dislodge the stuck brake caliper if not you have a bad master cylinder check valve.

    Front brake pad exchange guide.

    Step1 Park the Dodge Durango on a flat surface. Put the emergency brake on and put wedges behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Drain 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder, using a syringe. Remove the wheel and the tire assemblies. Step2 Compress the caliper piston back into the caliper bore using a large C-clamp to drive the piston into the bore. Use additional force if it is required. Using a 3/8 inch hex wrench or socket remove the caliper mounting bolts. Step3 Rotate the caliper rearward off the rotor and out from its mount. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads. Remove the spring clip that holds the inboard brakes in the caliper. Tilt the pad out at the top to unseat the clip. Remove the retaining spring that secures it in the caliper. Unseat one spring end and rotate the pad out of the caliper. Step4 Suspend the caliper assembly from the Durango frame using mechanic's wire. Do not allow the caliper assembly to dangle from the brake hose as this may damage the brake hose. Step5 Clean the surfaces of the caliper and steering knuckle with a wire brush. Apply multi-mileage grease or similar product. Using brake fluid or break cleaner clean the caliper slide pins. Apply a light coating of silicone grease to the pins. Step6 Install the inboard brake pad and it's spring. Install the outboard brake pad. Install the caliper over the rotor and seat it in its original position until it is flush. Using a torque wrench, torque the slide caliper pins to 22 ft./lbs. Step7 Add brake fluid to the master cylinder. Bleed the brakes. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. Start the engine and pump the brakes 3-4 times to seat the brake pads. Reinstall the wheels. Test drive the Durango at slow to moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed correctly.
    Rear brake pad exchange.

    Step1 Lift the Durango off the ground with a car jack. Support the vehicle on all sides with jack stands. Keep children and small animals out of the vicinity when you replace the brakes. Step2 Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels with a torque wrench. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies and set them aside, face up, to prevent damage. Step3 Compress the caliper and remove it by lifting the top up and off the caliper adapter. Hang the caliper from the Durango's frame with mechanical wire. Step4 Remove the inboard and outboard brake shoes from the caliper adapter. Take off the top and bottom anti-rattle springs. Keep the springs separated, as they aren't interchangeable. Step5 Press the piston into the bore with a C-clamp. To prevent damage to the pistons, insert an old brake shoe in between the C-clamp and caliper piston. Remove the C-clamp. Step6 Wipe down the caliper mounting adapter and anti-rattle springs with brake cleaner. Grease the anti-rattle springs with brake grease. Install the bottom anti-rattle springs, followed by the top anti-rattle springs. Step7 Install the inboard brake shoes followed by the outboard brake shoes. Replace the caliper and the wheel and tire assemblies. Lower the vehicle to the ground and pump the brakes to seat the pistons.
