Are the nuts broken? Or the lugs that they screw on to broken? To get the lugs out, You need to take the tire off and pound them out with a big hammer. They just pull and wedge themselves tight. Sometimes they have to be in a certain position to allow the bolt to pass thru a hole behind it to get them all the way out. http://youtu.be/KLQ15VaHRK4 gives you an idea. You can do all this on the car and dont need power tools at all

Do I have to remove the center nut to replace broken lug studs

the correct way is to remove the hub and use a press so yes the hub nut will have to come off
the studs are pressed in and it you use a hammer and drift to remove/replace the broken studs , you will damage the wheel bearings

How to replace broken lug stud on front wheel

You can either remove the bearing, or what I do is. On the front/top of the spindle, I grind away a little of the spindle. Just enough to get the lug out. You see where to grind. You can knock the lug out with a hammer, but can't get it out of the way without grinding. Reinsert the new lug. I use a bigger nut to go over the lug, then use a lug nut to seat it into place.

How to replace a broken lug nut?

Lug Nuts can be purchased at your local parts store.
Once you get the nut...just screw it onto the lug and set to the proper torque.

Hope this helps...

I am wanting to replace the rear wheel studs that are broken. The wheel hub flange won't come off. Is there a special puller for this, do I need to apply more force or is there another method for removal?

You do not remove the wheel hub flange, just follow the procedure that I replied to earlier, and this is the procedure if you do not want to obtain a special tool for pressing the lug studs;

First you will have to pound the broken lug studs out of the wheel hub, then you will need a lug nut and about a half an inch thick of flat washers.

1. Insert the new lug stud through the wheel hub from behind so that the threaded end is facing out towards you and then put some grease on the threads.

2. Then slip the flat washers onto the lug stud followed by the lug nut, and run the lug nut down to take up the slack.

3. Then using a breaker bar tighten the lug nut until it pulls the lug stud through the wheel hub and it is flush with the wheel hub.

Be sure that the amount of flat washers used will make up for any non-threaded part of the lug stud that might stick out past the wheel hub preventing the lug nut from pulling the lug stud all the way through the wheel hub, and basically you do not want the lug nut to run out of threads before it can pull the lug stud flush with the wheel hub.

take off tire. remove old stud by hammering it out with a punch. put a socket behind axle plate so as not to break the plate. when replacing, just start stud from back by hand, then use a lug nut to pull it in tight. when tight replace tire!

Broken lug nut on right front wheel. Can you buy just one lug bolt and nut. the threads are stripped and they both need to be replaced. what is the procedure to replace the bolt?

hi,
remove the rotor with the lugs in it - take it to NAPA - they will remove the old one and replace it with a new lug bolt/nut combo for the price of the parts. 28ab2be.jpg

Need to replace broken lug bolt

If you have room behind the broken lug you can usually drive it out with a good smack of a sledge hammer. To re-install, use a stack of washers between the nut and flange and draw the lug into position. (plenty of oil on threads to avoid galling)
